First summer transfer exit at Middlesbrough confirmed as player pens emotional statement

For the second half of the previous season, Zach Hemming was on loan at St. Mirren.

Zach Hemming, who wrote an emotional thank-you note to St Mirren, was sold by Middlesbrough to League Two Chesterfield. Hemming helped St.

Mirren place in the top half of the Scottish Premiership during two different loan stints there. Stephen Robinson, the manager of the Buddies, stated towards the close of the previous campaign that negotiations were already in progress between Boro and St Mirren to make Hemming’s stay there permanent.

But for whatever reason, that transfer hasn’t happened, and Hemming has instead moved to Chesterfield, who lost out on promotion through the play-offs after finishing eighth in League Two the previous season. The 25-year-old academy graduate signed a three-year contract with the Spitfires for an unknown amount.

Hemming told the Chesterfield website after the move was finished: “I jumped at the chance to get my family settled for a longer period of time when the interest came in that I was going to come down and sign on a permanent.” With any luck, that will help on the field, and we can continue.

The move comes only one day after he stated that he will not be returning to St Mirren this summer, as had been planned. In an Instagram post, the shot-stopper expressed gratitude to the Scottish Premiership club for their treatment of him throughout his 18-month tenure.

He wrote: “Thank you, St Mirren FC and fans, for the past year and a half of support and memories. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it, from winning Europe in the first year to finishing in the top six in the second year – my third consecutive year with the club. Thank you to all of the players and staff for your dedication on a daily basis.

“Many thanks to Jamie Langfield for everything he’s done since I’ve been here. My family has called this place home, and we are disappointed that we will not be able to stay for the foreseeable future. But I suppose that is football. I’m devastated, but my job is at stake, and I must do what is best for my family. Best wishes for the season ahead.”
