The latest Coventry City news from CoventryLive as Haji Wright’s fitness concerns see him return to the Sky Blues
Haji Wright has been ruled out of the remainder of the Concacaf Gold Cup and returned to Coventry City following an injury sustained on international duty.
The United States has stated that the striker has “an Achilles issue that will not be resolved in time for him to continue competing in the tournament”.
The 27-year-old has been returned to the Sky Blues for “evaluation and treatment” on what is believed to be his left Achilles.
Frank Lampard’s players are set to return for pre-season training on July 1, in just eight days, though Wright’s itinerary would most likely have been different given his commitments with the USA.
The Sky Blues play their first pre-season friendly on July 23, and the Championship season resumes on the weekend of August 8-10. While the seriousness of Wright’s injury is unknown, it is an early issue for City manager Lampard.
Wright scored in the United States’ 5-0 Gold Cup triumph over Trinidad and Tobago, coming off the bench.
He missed Thursday’s 1-0 victory over Saudi Arabia in Austin, Texas, Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Haiti, and is now officially out of the quarterfinals against Costa Rica on June 30.
Wright, who signed with City for a club record amount from Antalyaspor in the summer of 2023, has 31 goals in 79 outings, including 12 in 31 last season. However, he missed more than three months and 19 games in the previous season due to an ankle ligament injury.
When he returned, he was probably Lampard’s most potent offensive weapon, with Ellis Simms underperforming in the lead-up and Brandon Thomas-Asante serving primarily as a substitute.
