‘Leader’ Matty Pearson makes Doncaster Rovers revelation following Huddersfield Town departure

DONCASTER ROVERS have ended their search for a senior centre-half after bringing in former Huddersfield Town and Barnsley defender Matty Pearson.

Pearson, 31, has signed a two-year contract.

Keighley-born Pearson just left Town after four seasons with the club, having joined in the summer of 2021.

The no-nonsense centre-back, who was linked with Bradford City earlier in the transfer window, will offer experience to a Rovers backline that will be without Tom Anderson, Joe Olowu, and Richard Wood next season due to their recent departures.

Pearson stated, “I’m seeking for regular football and to play for a winning team, and Doncaster Rovers can hopefully provide me with both. I am pleased to be here. The gaffer is a major draw. I first spoke with him eight years ago when he was at Peterborough, and it sticks with you. I’ve always wanted to work with him in some capacity.

“And with Doncaster winning the league last season and into League One, we both match. I can provide that expertise; the team is in League One, and I believe we can both move forward.”

Pearson was a key member of the Town team that advanced to the play-off final in 2021-22, appearing in 135 games across four seasons. He also spent a season at Barnsley in 2017-18 before joining Luton, where he helped them win the third-tier title in 2018-19.

Grant McCann, the football club’s manager, stated, “I believe he will be a fantastic signing.

“I’ve known Matty for a long time, from my first period at Peterborough, when I tried to sign him. He is a natural leader, a winner, and an aggressive player, and I believe he will fill the vacuum left by Tom Anderson and Richard Wood.
