Nikola Katic sees Plymouth Argyle move end in tears but dream Rangers return is back on after January links
In terms of low-risk signings, players with experience in the SPFL, international football, playing in Europe, and playing with Rangers must be near the top of the list, with one former Ibrox fan favorite back on the market after suffering a painful last-day relegation with Plymouth Argyle.
The center of defense is perhaps the most important position that needs to be addressed, but the decline in quality from Filip Helander (at his best) and Connor Goldson, especially during the title-winning season, has been concerning.
Katic was linked with a return in January and has grabbed the headlines in his brief loan term on the south coast, in particular, his man of the match display against Liverpool to knock the Premier League champions out of the FA Cup.
The Rangers rearguard hasn’t seen a defensive masterclass like that in a while.
Although Robin Propper is skilled with the ball at his feet and the Bosnian international may still have limited possession, who would you like to have at the back?
Katic has made it clear that he wants to rejoin Rangers, and he possesses a particular quality that will help bolster a defense that has appeared noticeably weak.
“It’s never easy, especially when the season is about to end and the loan players know exactly ‘I will return back to my home club and I will return back to the roots,’ so they can lose a little bit of spirit,” the BBC reported.
“But that’s exactly the opposite because Nikola, that’s an international football player, he’s a national player for Bosnia.”
Plymouth manager Miron Muslic is a huge fan of Katic and the impact he made with his recent determination to play through the pain barrier, a far cry from witnessing Propper (and Leon Balogun) being replaced repeatedly throughout a tough season.
“He can now take the next two and a half to three weeks to fully recuperate and heal, but he practically forced us to play Middlesbrough.
Because of this, every piece of data and analysis is flawless, which is why you should conduct a character check on players before signing them. I realized in January this is the correct player for us.”
Katic did everything he could to keep Plymouth in the Championship, but it was not enough.
Personality. Something Katic possesses in abundance, but the Rangers defense currently lacks.
