QPR and Millwall January target made free agent by Premier League club

During the January transfer window, QPR and Millwall were rumored to have expressed interest in the Crystal Palace midfielder.
After eight and a half years at Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace dismissed Jeffrey Schlupp, ending a chapter in the former Premier League champion’s career.

After weeks of transfer rumors, the adaptable midfielder and defender was transferred on loan to Celtic in January after losing favor under Oliver Glasner. The 32-year-old was being connected to a number of Championship teams at the time, including Millwall and QPR of London.

After making 247 appearances with the Eagles, Schlupp has revealed that he will not be extending his contract with the team and will be leaving as a free agent. After winning the Premier League with Leicester City in 2016, he first joined the Foxes in January 2017.

The departure of Jeffrey Schlupp from Crystal Palace
“Playing for this club has been an amazing eight years,” Schlupp said on the club website. Playing at Crystal Palace has meant a lot to me, and I’ve met some wonderful individuals, including the chairman, the gaffer, and every employee I’ve met over the years. This crew deserves a huge “thank you” for doing something truly remarkable.

“Anyone you question about the Palace supporters will tell you about the ambiance they foster and how many times they have helped us get through tough times. Thank you to all of the fans who have always stood with me; they have been our 12th guy. I hope I have made you proud. I will most certainly see you again soon.

“Over the course of nine distinct seasons with Crystal Palace, Jeffrey has scored some amazing goals and made numerous significant contributions to the Football Club,” added Chairman Steve Parish.

He has given his all to all that has been required of him, regardless of the role or time, and it says volumes about him that he has left such a positive impression under many managers and in various systems. Players of Jeffrey’s caliber and integrity are the foundation of any successful club, and as he departs SE25, we have a lot to thank him for. He departs with our sincere appreciation and everyone at Crystal Palace’s warmest wishes.

In January, Schlupp attracted Championship attention. During his brief stay in Glasgow this year, Schlupp helped Celtic win the Scottish Premiership. Under Brendan Rodgers, the midfield player made 18 appearances, with one goal and one assist.

TBR Football reported in January that Millwall was interested in the youngster, while Alan Nixon, a transfer expert, mentioned QPR as one among the teams considering a loan deal. The news that the player will be available on a free transfer may have turned the minds of all those teams, including Coventry City, who were mentioned as possible suitors.

Schlupp has made 66 appearances in the second division, giving him Championship experience. The star scored six goals and provided two assists over those games, which took place at Leicester City between 2010 and 2014. In 2014, he and the Foxes won the championship.

In other news, Mo Salah comforted the former Millwall player following the Premier League manager’s public censure.
