Southampton are again linked with a move for Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, nearly a year after their unsuccessful £5 million bid for the 22-year-old.

Rak-Sakyi’s interest in joining the Saints follows his successful loan spell at Sheffield United, where he scored seven goals in 22 Championship starts. He may still play a role in the Championship play-offs.

Despite last summer’s rejection, Palace may now be more willing to sell, especially since Rak-Sakyi’s path to the first team is unclear. With Southampton desperate for new attacking talent after a disappointing Premier League season, the links have resurfaced at an important time for the club.

Southampton FC expressed concern over reported Jesurun Rak-Sakyi pursuit.

Southampton is interested in signing Rak-Sakyi this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Last summer, the Saints made an offer of £5 million plus add-ons for the left-footed attacker, but Crystal Palace refused to sell. Despite reports of a £15 million move from Leeds, he ended up on loan at Sheffield United.

On paper, Rak-Sakyi’s profile appears appealing. His dribbling stats (2.44 successful dribbles per 90 minutes) and goal-scoring record in League One and the Championship suggest he could provide the missing spark in Southampton’s attack.

Competition Season Club Appearances Goals Assists Yellow Cards Minutes Played
Championship 2024–25 Sheffield United 34 7 2 1 1,732
League One 2022–23 Charlton Athletic 43 15 8 3 3,499

However, questions remain about whether Rak-Sakyi is the transformative signing the Saints need.

Although he has performed well at Sheffield United, injuries have hindered his consistency. At 22, he still has room for improvement, and there’s no guarantee he’ll immediately improve Southampton’s fortunes.

Football League World interviewed Southampton fan pundit Martin Sanders, who expressed concern about the Saints’ potential return to the Rak-Sakyi transfer trail. This comes after the departure of teenage prodigy Samuel Amo-Ameyaw to Strasbourg in January.

“[It will] be interesting to see if we go back in for him,” Martin told FLW.

“We now have a new sporting director, so I’m not sure if he fits the profile – the hierarchy of who handles transfers has changed. I wonder if people are linking him because of his past.

“We had the perfect winger in Sam [Amo]-Ameyaw, and we let him go on loan to Strasbourg, but they must buy him. We had a fantastic young winger in him, but we let him go, which was extremely poor.

“We were talking about it last week as fans and thought he was the next winger to come through, but we’ll probably waste £5 million on this guy (Rak-Sakyi), who won’t be any good.

“To be honest, I haven’t seen much of Rak-Sakyi, but our squad needs to be completely rebuilt; it’s a mess.

“But I’m not massively enamoured with this one to be honest, I just thought we had the academy product coming through.”

Rak-Sakyi poses a risk for Southampton following a disappointing Premier League campaign.

Southampton’s renewed pursuit of Rak-Sakyi reflects a recognition of their attacking weaknesses and desperation after a historically poor season.

While Rak-Sakyi’s numbers and potential make him an appealing target, supporters’ frustration is understandable, especially given the club’s recent decision to loan out promising academy winger Sam Amo-Ameyaw with an option to purchase.

Rak-Sakyi could provide depth and dynamism, but the move is not without risk, particularly if it comes at the expense of developing homegrown talent.

There is also the fact that Rak-Sakyi hasn’t always started under Wilder in recent times; Saints loanee Ben Brereton Diaz has been in on the right flank ahead of him more frequently, which could be a source of concern, given the club’s willingness to loan the Chilean out.

While Rak-Sakyi has undeniable talent, Southampton could be more ambitious this summer in terms of attacking signings.
