NEWS REPORT: Phillies Viewed as Top Landing Spot for $151M Gold Glove Infielder

As the August 3 MLB Trade Deadline draws nearer, the Philadelphia Phillies appear poised to make a significant move that could reverberate across the league. The club has multiple areas in need of reinforcement, and third base has once again emerged as a primary concern specifically, the possibility of upgrading over Alec Bohm, a topic that has followed the organization for several seasons. This time around, though, the chatter carries extra weight, as MLB insider Robert Murray of FanSided has linked Philadelphia to San Francisco Giants hot-corner standout Matt Chapman as a potential solution.

Murray pointed out that Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is perpetually a front-office figure worth monitoring when the trade market heats up. Dombrowski has a well-documented history of swinging for the fences with aggressive, high-profile acquisitions, and with Philadelphia sitting at 41-35 and trailing the Atlanta Braves by just seven games in the National League East, the conditions seem ripe for another bold stroke. While Murray noted that a pitcher like Tarik Skubal would be a logical target given Dombrowski’s affinity for bolstering his rotation, he also emphasized that adding a dynamic bat potentially as a long-term successor to Bohm at the hot corner fits neatly alongside the team’s concurrent searches for outfield help and additional starting pitching.

Well deserved Gold Glove for Matt Chapman for last year. On his way to another with the Giants for sure…

Chapman, who is currently in the second campaign of a six-year, $151 million contract with the Giants, would represent a substantial financial commitment for any acquiring club. However, his value on the defensive side of the ball is virtually unmatched; he ranks among the premier defensive third basemen in the sport, a fact underscored by his five Gold Glove Awards and one All-Star selection. Offensively, he is posting a .243 average with seven home runs and 41 RBIs so far this season, offering a blend of power and reliability that could fortify Philadelphia’s lineup.

Meanwhile, the Giants find themselves mired in one of baseball’s worst overall records, positioning them as clear-cut sellers as the deadline approaches. San Francisco has already been mentioned in speculation involving trades of players like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray, but Bob Nightengale of USA Today has reported that the organization is particularly eager to move Chapman. The hurdle, however, is significant: Chapman still has $100 million guaranteed over the next four years and holds a full no-trade clause, which could complicate any deal and potentially limit the Giants’ ability to find a willing trade partner despite their hopes of offloading his contract.

For the Phillies, the pressure is mounting as the deadline nears. After a sluggish start to the season, they have rebounded impressively and now rank among the league’s hottest clubs. That turnaround has placed Dombrowski squarely in the spotlight, according to ESPN’s Buster Olney, who recently named the veteran executive as one of the most heavily scrutinized decision-makers ahead of the trade cutoff. Olney noted that while Philadelphia operates with a large-market payroll and substantial financial flexibility, there is legitimate debate about whether the team’s competitive window is beginning to narrow, given that several core stars—including Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, Trea Turner, and Zack Wheeler are now in their 30s. Yet with Cristopher Sánchez emerging as a dominant force on the mound and Brandon Marsh performing well offensively, the Phillies clearly possess a formidable roster this year and should be aggressively seeking to capitalize on that strength.

Olney also recalled Dombrowski’s aggressive maneuver last summer, when he surrendered a considerable prospect package to acquire closer Jhoan Duran, and noted that rival executives are now speculating whether he might be the most likely front-office leader to pull off another blockbuster. Given Dombrowski’s track record of assembling elite starting rotations, the prospect of rolling into October with a postseason trio featuring Sánchez, Wheeler, and potentially Skubal is an enticing vision that could make Philadelphia a formidable threat in the playoffs.

As it stands, the Phillies hold a 42-36 record, and all signs point toward a front office that is actively weighing major moves to push the team over the top.
