Miami QB Darian Mensah explains why Transfer Wasn’t About Money Despite The ‘Canes Dropping A Huge Bag

While the Miami Hurricanes made it to the College Football Playoff finals last season, they fell short of capturing the ACC Championship.
That title belonged to the Duke Blue Devils, spearheaded by quarterback Darian Mensah. But once the season wrapped up, Mensah left Duke in the lurch and transferred to the Hurricanes via the portal.

This was the second consecutive year Mensah had exited a program through the transfer portal, having previously moved from Tulane to Duke. It also marked the second straight year that Mensah secured the title of the highest-paid quarterback in college football.

Now, however, Mensah and his mother, Naomi, are pushing back against the assumption that financial gain was his primary motivation.

Why Did Darian Mensah Claim He Left Duke For Miami?

Darian Mensah Maintains His Move to Miami Wasn’t Financially Driven
Miami has reaped significant rewards from high-profile transfer quarterbacks over the past two seasons. Cam Ward took home the 2024 Heisman Trophy and went first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft after arriving from Washington State.
Then Carson Beck guided the Hurricanes to the national championship game following his transfer from Georgia.

“That played a huge role in my decision to transfer watching what those guys accomplished,” Mensah remarked Wednesday at ACC Media Days in Charlotte. “My offensive coordinator, Coach Dawson, tailors the offense to the quarterback’s strengths and preferences. That was a major draw for me. Honestly, it was one of the top two factors in my transfer seeing the kind of work Dawson has done with those two quarterbacks is remarkable.”

Still, the reported $6.5 million figure is impossible to overlook.

“People were criticizing Darian, assuming it was purely about money. That wasn’t the case. There would have been money regardless,” Naomi Mensah told Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports. “We focused on the broader picture of where Darian wants his career to go. That ultimately guided our decision. We asked: what would best position him to reach his ultimate goals? He could win another ACC title at Duke, but would that get him to a national championship and a Heisman?”

As it happens, Mensah’s sister Grace also transferred to Miami from Oregon, where she spent three seasons on the Ducks’ women’s soccer team. There are also whispers that Mensah was provided with a sizable home on a golf course for his time in Miami.

Whatever the true reasons behind his transfer, Mensah ensures that Miami’s quarterback pipeline stays strong and keeps the Hurricanes firmly in the conversation for another national title run in 2026.
