Will Stein’s appearance at SEC Media Days only reinforced what the Big Blue Nation already believes about the framework he’s rapidly put in place at Kroger Field. Stein has consistently embraced the high expectations of Kentucky’s fanbase, reiterating on several occasions that his ambition is to elevate the program to the absolute pinnacle of college football.
That said, not everybody is sold on Stein particularly those outside the Lexington bubble. Critics have cast plenty of doubt on his debut season as head coach, with many outsiders simply unconvinced that success will come as quickly as some predict. But Nick Saban has voiced his support for Stein, and really, that ought to settle the matter.
As first reported by On3’s Daniel Hager, Saban addressed the new wave of SEC coaches during his time at SEC Media Days. While running through the lengthy list, the legendary coach made a point to pause on Stein, offering reassurance about his first year leading a program.

“Will Stein has Kenny Minchey from Notre Dame, who almost won the quarterback job there. He’s a pretty good player,” Saban stated, highlighting one of Kentucky’s major offseason storylines.
“He likes his offensive line, so he’s got pieces to work with. He hasn’t been a head coach before, coming over from a coordinator role. But he’s been very successful. I’m sure he’ll do well.”
Saban certainly knows Kentucky Football well from his Alabama days he compiled a perfect 6–0 record against the Wildcats so he understands what the program looks like when it falls short of expectations.
Stein’s lack of head-coaching experience has generated some unease among the BBN, but if Nick Saban is telling you not to sweat it… well, you catch the drift. When a seven-time champion and Hall of Famer gives Will Stein his seal of approval, there’s really no room for anyone to object.
No Reason to Dislike Will Stein
At least, not before he’s coached a single game at Kroger Field.
It might be true that Stein’s first season flies somewhat under the radar compared to what lies ahead in his tenure; after all, he only began assembling this roster in December, and even the best coaches require a bit of time to acclimate to a new role.
But Kentucky fans have examined Stein’s track record repeatedly. He ranks among the sport’s most accomplished offensive minds, and with the genuine connection he already feels toward Lexington, it’s tough to envision a more suitable fit from the jump.
I wouldn’t go so far as to say Kentucky fans are expecting a national championship though I’m not entirely sure that’s accurate either. This group craves everything, and since Stein hasn’t done anything to temper those cravings, why not aim as high as possible? With Saban’s public backing, Coach Stein currently has the entire landscape at his disposal.
