PHILADELPHIA – As the August 3 MLB trade deadline approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies are facing a critical need to bolster their outfield, a situation made more urgent by the season-ending injury to offseason acquisition Adolis García. With the team holding a playoff spot but struggling with production from their outfield, MLB analysts are pointing to a clear and necessary solution: acquiring Kansas City Royals outfielder Lane Thomas .
The prediction comes from CBS Sports analyst Mike Axisa, who identified Thomas as the ideal target to address the Phillies’ most glaring weakness. “Phillies right fielders have been among the worst in baseball and their right-handed hitters have, literally, been the worst in baseball by OPS,” Axisa wrote. “This team badly needs a right-handed-hitting outfielder, which, unfortunately, is a profile in short supply” .
The numbers support this assessment. Phillies outfielders entered Tuesday with a combined .658 OPS, ranking 29th in the majors. It is the sixth-lowest mark by a Phillies outfield in franchise history and the lowest since 1942 . Interim manager Don Mattingly has been forced to shuffle lineups, starting options like Bryan De La Cruz and rookie Gabriel Rincones Jr. to limited success, underscoring the team’s lack of an everyday solution .
Thomas, a 30-year-old right-handed hitter, is seen as a near-perfect addition. While he is batting .229 this season, he has shown significant power, with 10 home runs so far and a career-high 28 home runs and 86 RBIs set in 2023 with the Washington Nationals . His recent play has been particularly encouraging; since June 4, Thomas has posted an .814 OPS with seven home runs and 22 RBIs, boosting his trade value after a slow start .
His profile as a pending free agent is another key factor. Thomas is owed approximately $1.75 million for the remainder of the season, making him an affordable rental that the Phillies could acquire without sacrificing top-tier prospects . This aligns with the Phillies’ broader strategy, as they are expected to be aggressive buyers under president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who has a history of making bold deadline moves .
“He’s better as a platoon guy than as an everyday player, but, in this market, Thomas is a better play than a bigger name but more limited player,” Axisa added, highlighting Thomas’s value as a solid all-around contributor on offense, defense, and on the bases .
The Royals are one of the few clear sellers this deadline, and Thomas is expected to be moved. MLB.com insider Mark Feinsand recently named Thomas as one of the likeliest players to be traded, noting his expiring contract and recent hot streak .
The Phillies are not alone in their pursuit of outfield help. The market for right-handed bats is thin, with other potential targets including the Angels’ Jo Adell and the Diamondbacks’ Lourdes Gurriel Jr., though both present more significant question marks . The Phillies have also been linked to Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho, as Toronto is expected to sell off veterans . However, Thomas remains the name most frequently cited as the “necessary move” for a team desperate to upgrade its outfield production .
The urgency for an addition is echoed by the players themselves. Slugger Bryce Harper has publicly stated, “I think we need some help,” while Mattingly has expressed that the team is always looking to improve . With the Phillies currently holding a 57-52 record, the acquisition of a proven power bat like Thomas could provide the spark needed to solidify their playoff positioning and make a deep run in the postseason.
