The International Signing Period has yielded an intriguing young pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Philadelphia Phillies have not historically been major players in signing Asian international free agents. However, they aimed to change that approach following the recent wave of overseas talent, and they’ve now made a significant move in Korea to help build that pipeline.

According to Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic on X, the Phillies have officially signed 17-year-old Korean right-handed pitcher Chin-man Park for $1.205 million during the International Signing Period. While such a large investment in a teenager who won’t reach the majors anytime soon is a bold commitment, the long-term upside could be enormous. Though developing a young pitcher requires time and patience, Philadelphia clearly saw enough promise to award him such a substantial bonus.

This signing only became possible because Philadelphia traded with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies to acquire additional Bonus Pool Money. Without those deals, the Phillies would not have had the funds to offer Park such a lucrative contract. While he might have signed with the Phillies for less, the front office, led by Dave Dombrowski, didn’t have to take that risk thanks in part to a savvy $500,000 acquisition by trading Griff McGarry to the Dodgers.

As reported by Joe Doyle of Over Slot on X, Park stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 205 pounds. He features a polished four-pitch arsenal (fastball, slider, curveball, changeup/splitter) and consistently throws strikes, which is impressive for his age.

The Phillies have had notable success developing young pitchers in recent years, and they hope Park will become their next breakout star. Their current big-league rotation includes homegrown talents Cristopher Sánchez, Aaron Nola, and Andrew Painter. They also traded former pitching prospect Mick Abel to the Minnesota Twins for Jhoan Durán, while 2025 first-round pick Gage Wood is currently dominating at Double-A. With such a bright future on the mound, Park could play a major role in Philadelphia’s sustained success.
