Phillies star pitcher reveals how mound impacted his game vs. Blue Jays

On Tuesday night in Toronto, the Philadelphia Phillies witnessed their ace, Zack Wheeler, face an unusual obstacle during a 3-2 loss to the Blue Jays. Wheeler later revealed that a wet mound at Rogers Centre disrupted his usual pitching mechanics.

Despite the conditions, Wheeler delivered a solid performance, allowing just one earned run over six innings. He gave up six hits, issued no walks, and struck out five on 96 pitches, keeping the Phillies within striking distance.

But the stat line didn’t tell the whole story. Wheeler admitted the slippery surface prevented him from using his lower body properly, forcing him to rely more on his arm than usual.

Following the loss, NBC Sports Philadelphia shared Wheeler’s reaction on X, formerly Twitter, as he aimed to move past the strange circumstances.

“You take those games and just throw them out right away,” Wheeler said, explaining that the wet mound led him to pitch more with his arm.

That mindset is key for the Phillies, as Wheeler didn’t want one odd night to cause a mechanical overcorrection. Pitchers often need short memories after abnormal conditions—especially when the final numbers are still respectable.

Wheeler also noted he couldn’t fully load into his back leg. For the Phillies, that’s a significant detail because his power derives from his legs and hips. Any compromised push-off can make an outing feel much harder than the box score suggests.

Wheeler gave the Phillies enough to win, but the bullpen couldn’t hold things together late, allowing Toronto to secure a 3-2 comeback victory.

Still, the 2024 All-MLB First Team right-hander framed the start as an anomaly. The Phillies can take solace in Wheeler’s results while acknowledging the mound issue as an avoidable concern. Now, the focus shifts to recovery, routine, and keeping their ace on track.
