The future of the Auburn Tigers’ offense under head coach Alex Golesh took a significant step forward on Saturday as the program secured a commitment from 2027 three-star quarterback Gary Chatman Jr. .
Chatman, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia, announced his pledge to the Tigers just days after decommitting from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons . His commitment adds a crucial piece to Auburn’s 2027 recruiting class, which is rapidly gaining momentum.

A Swift Recruitment Flip
The Tigers moved quickly once Chatman reopened his recruitment. Auburn extended an offer to the Georgia native on April 22, and after an official visit to the Plains on May 1, the decision was all but sealed .
“When I went back up there for my second visit, I just loved everything about it,” Chatman told Rivals. “I loved the coaches and the environment… that’s what led to my decision. I knew when I left that visit that I was going to commit to Auburn” .
The pull of the SEC, combined with a strong relationship with quarterbacks coach Joel Gordon, proved too much for the previous Wake Forest commitment to withstand. Chatman cited Gordon’s development of talents like Brock Purdy and current Auburn signal-caller Byrum Brown as a major factor . Head Coach Alex Golesh’s energy and vision for the program also resonated deeply with the young recruit .
“With this commitment, I’m shutting it down,” Chatman declared. “I am not visiting anywhere else… I am all Auburn” .
Prospect Profile and Instant Impact on Rankings
As a first-year starter for Brookwood High School last fall, Chatman demonstrated the dual-threat capability that Alex Golesh’s system thrives on. He threw for 1,494 yards and 12 touchdowns while adding 418 yards and five scores on the ground, leading his team to the second round of the Georgia Class 6A playoffs .
While currently rated a three-star prospect by the 247Sports Composite ranking him as the No. 63 quarterback nationally and the No. 123 player in Georgia Chatman represents a major recruiting win for Auburn in a neighboring battleground state. His athleticism fits the prototype Golesh utilized successfully at USF with Byrum Brown .
The addition of Chatman has already provided a tangible boost to Auburn’s recruiting class. According to 247Sports’ class calculator, the Tigers jumped from 43rd to 31st in the national rankings and moved up to 11th in the SEC following his commitment .
Building the 2027 Class
Chatman becomes the sixth commit for Auburn’s 2027 cycle, joining a group that is prioritizing quality early on. He is the first quarterback in a class that currently features four-star running back Myson Johnson-Cook, four-star defensive lineman Donivan Moore, and several three-star prospects at tight end, offensive line, and wide receiver .
While Chatman will arrive in 2027, the Tigers are projected to lean on current transfers Byrum Brown and Tristan Ti’a in the immediate future. However, given Golesh’s history of utilizing mobile quarterbacks, Chatman will have the opportunity to compete for early playing time once he arrives on campus
