In the world of college basketball fans, three things are unavoidable: death, taxes, and NBA Draft decisions. For the Big Blue Nation (BBN), that reality is hitting hard as everyone across Kentucky anxiously waits for Malachi Moreno to make his choice.

Right now, the possibility of Moreno leaving feels more real than ever, and for Kentucky’s roster, that would be cause for serious concern. Still, even if Moreno departs which remains far from certain—Mark Pope might already have a fallback plan in motion.
According to BigBlueDylan, Croatian big man Michael Ružić is expected to announce his commitment soon. While BYU has been viewed as the clear frontrunner, Kentucky is still in the mix. If Ružić’s decision drags into late April and overlaps with Moreno’s draft call, things could intensify quickly.
Get ready for a nerve-racking ride, BBN. Buckle up.
One Way or Another
If the buzz is accurate, Ružić has long been viewed as an NBA-caliber talent and could fit into Kentucky’s system under the right setup. The stretch forward shot 36% from deep this season in Spain’s Liga Endesa, moves well on both ends, and offers major developmental potential.
His averages of six points and three rebounds per game may not jump off the page, but he’s competing against elite-level competition pro ball overseas is a different beast than college hoops.
Dylan quoted an international scout calling Ružić “one of the better available pickups right now,” adding, “A seven-footer with a jumper and great mobility you can play him as a backup five or a starting four. If you’ve got money left to spend, he’s probably one of the best players you could use it on.”
Kentucky does have funds available, but if Moreno leaves, that budget could be blown wide open.
A Big Blue Bag
At first glance, adding Ružić might raise questions about how he fits alongside Ousmane N’Diaye, a similar player in build and style. But the Wildcats have already thought this through.
With more traditional, physical bigs like Justin McBride and Franck Kepnang in the rotation, Coach Pope would have options to counter any matchup. Is it better than having Moreno back in his expected starting role? Probably not.
Still, Ružić has all the signs of a prospect who could transition well to college basketball especially within Pope’s offensive system. Even though BYU leads for now, Kentucky could throw a desperate, big-money offer at Ružić if the Moreno situation goes south.
That seems unlikely at the moment but so did the idea of Moreno leaving for the draft in the first place. In the NIL era, you really never know what’s coming next.
