Tigers Pitcher Troy Melton Impresses in First Start Back From IL

The Detroit Tigers were in desperate need of a positive spark to stop their recent downturn, and right-hander Troy Melton provided exactly that in his long-awaited first appearance of the season.

After missing the opening months due to an injury, Melton took the mound on Sunday and immediately offered a steadying presence for a team that had been struggling to find solutions. The 25-year-old pitched into the sixth inning, surrendering just one run, and helped Detroit defeat the Baltimore Orioles in the second game of a doubleheader at Camden Yards.

Detroit entered the evening on an eight-game losing streak, having just suffered another demoralizing loss earlier in the day. Melton’s solid outing prevented the Tigers from enduring their longest losing streak in nearly three years and gave the clubhouse a crucial morale boost as they moved into the next phase of the season.

Melton Makes an Immediate Impact
The right-hander had been sidelined during spring training due to elbow inflammation, prompting Detroit to handle one of its young arms with care. He spent much of May on a rehab assignment, making several starts in the minors before being cleared to rejoin the big-league rotation.

Any concerns about rust faded quickly. Melton gave up only two hits and one earned run over 5 2/3 innings, earning the win in Detroit’s 4-1 victory against Baltimore. He recorded three strikeouts and three walks, holding Orioles hitters to a .111 average and posting a 0.88 WHIP in his season debut.

The 25-year-old was also highly efficient despite a pitch limit. He needed just 79 pitches to get through 22 batters, consistently working ahead to avoid significant trouble. His only mistake came when a leadoff walk eventually scored, accounting for Baltimore’s lone run.

Offense Provides Early Support
While Melton controlled the Orioles on the mound, Detroit’s offense did enough early damage to put him in line for his first win of the year.

The Tigers quickly built a lead. After putting runners on base in the first inning, catcher Dillon Dingler delivered the game’s first big hit, a two-run homer that gave Detroit control.

The early advantage proved crucial for a team that had struggled offensively for much of May. Entering the game, the Tigers had repeatedly failed to generate sufficient run support, contributing to a rough stretch that dropped them to the bottom of the AL Central standings.

Detroit added insurance later thanks to rookie Kevin McGonigle, whose RBI single extended his impressive on-base streak. The young infielder has been one of the few bright spots during the Tigers’ difficult month, consistently finding ways to contribute despite the team’s overall offensive struggles.

Skubal, Verlander Continue Working Toward Returns
Tarik Skubal appears to be making encouraging progress in his recovery. The ace recently faced hitters in a live bullpen session and reportedly generated several swings and misses while building up his workload.

Although the Tigers haven’t announced a return timeline, the session marked another positive step as Detroit hopes to get one of baseball’s top pitchers back in the rotation.

The news regarding Justin Verlander is less certain. The future Hall of Famer is eligible to come off the 60-day injured list soon, but he is still working his way back to game action. Manager A.J. Hinch recently indicated that Verlander is expected to throw another live bullpen session before beginning a rehab assignment.
