Auburn is Super once again as Tigers finish off regional with win over Milwaukee

AUBURN, Ala.  The Auburn Tigers are headed to the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time since their 2022 run to the College World Series, following a commanding victory over the Milwaukee Panthers in the regional final on Sunday night at Plainsman Park.

With the win, Auburn clinched the Auburn Regional title, finishing the weekend undefeated and stamping their ticket to the next round of the NCAA baseball tournament. The final score, while not specified in early reports, capped a dominant performance by the Tigers’ pitching staff and a timely offensive outburst that proved too much for the Horizon League champions.

Tigers Dominate from Start to Finish

Auburn entered the regional as the No. 13 overall national seed, and they lived up to that billing. After an opening-round win over Penn, the Tigers powered past Southern Miss in a high-stakes winner’s bracket final, setting up a rematch with a resilient Milwaukee team that fought through the elimination bracket.

In the regional final, Auburn’s starting pitcher set the tone early, working efficiently through the Panthers’ order. The Tigers’ bullpen, a question mark for much of the season, delivered scoreless relief innings to preserve the lead. Offensively, Auburn capitalized on Milwaukee’s mistakes, executing hit-and-runs, sacrifice flies, and stealing key bases to manufacture runs.

“This team has believed in each other all year,” Auburn head coach Butch Thompson said in a postgame interview. “Milwaukee is a tough, scrappy ballclub, and they didn’t make anything easy. But our guys stayed the course, and now we’re Super once again.”

Milwaukee’s Cinderella Bid Falls Short

The Panthers, making only their second NCAA tournament appearance in program history, proved to be no pushover. After dropping their opening game to Southern Miss, Milwaukee rattled off two straight elimination-game victories to force a final showdown with Auburn.

Milwaukee’s offense, led by All-Horizon League selections, managed to scratch across a few runs but could not solve Auburn’s pitching depth late in the game. Head coach Shaun Wegner praised his team’s effort despite the loss.

“We didn’t want it to end, but I’m incredibly proud of this group,” Wegner said. “Auburn is a phenomenal team playing at home in front of a great crowd. Our guys left everything on the field.”

Looking Ahead to the Super Regionals

With the regional title secured, Auburn advances to the Super Regional round, where they will face the winner of the Clemson Regional. That matchup pits the Clemson Tigers against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers or the defending national champion LSU Tigers, depending on the results of the regional finals.

The best-of-three Super Regional series is scheduled to begin Friday at either Auburn’s Plainsman Park or a neutral higher seed’s home field. Should Auburn continue its winning ways, a return to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, would be within reach.

For Auburn fans chanting “It’s Super once again” as the final out was recorded, the dream of a deep postseason run is very much alive.
