Auburn’s kickoff window time slots reveal something fans don’t want to admit

During the 2026 season, the Auburn Tigers will face a series of early kickoff times, as revealed by ESPN on Wednesday night alongside the rest of the SEC schedule. From the October 24 matchup against LSU to the November 14 game versus Mississippi State, every contest is slated for the 11 a.m.–12 p.m. CT window. Other opponents in that stretch include Ole Miss and Arkansas.

The Iron Bowl, however, will retain its traditional late-afternoon or early-evening slot an 11 a.m. start for that rivalry would be unthinkable. The Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry against Georgia will also rightfully take place in the afternoon. Still, the abundance of early games highlights a clear pattern.

ESPN seems comfortable repeatedly placing Auburn opposite FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff. Could this indicate that the network doubts Auburn’s competitiveness by then? It certainly appears that way. Given how the program has been portrayed during the Bryan Harsin and Hugh Freeze eras, TV executives aren’t expecting the Tigers to make November games against Mississippi State and Arkansas particularly meaningful. They’re simply playing the odds.

With this announcement, Auburn has received a dose of skepticism. And perhaps that’s exactly where head coach Alex Golesh wants his team to be.

Golesh will likely embrace the underdog role
He took over a struggling Tennessee program and left its offense in a much stronger position. He then replicated that turnaround at USF though Bulls fans may not appreciate it, since Golesh brought much of that momentum with him when he left.

Golesh won’t complain about the lack of primetime exposure either. Nothing he has done this offseason suggests he wants to engage in off-field drama; his focus has remained strictly on football. At the slightest hint of controversy, he has been quick to clarify the record.

With full attention on football, there has been plenty of positive chatter about team cohesion at the Woltosz Football Performance Center. The defense, benefiting from more continuity heading into spring, is currently ahead of the offense, while the offensive line is experiencing early struggles perhaps an expected development. Still, the absence of distractions and Golesh’s low-key, businesslike demeanor (emphasizing respect and X’s and O’s) bodes well for team chemistry entering fall camp.

Even if Auburn improves, the schedule remains tough. LSU may indeed live up to its hype. Pete Golding could have one more strong season in Oxford. And by November, Auburn might very well deserve those 11 a.m. CT kickoffs against Mississippi State and Arkansas.

Losses will come, and growing pains are inevitable. Even if the Tigers shock the world, Golesh will likely keep the team flying under the radar, steering clear of any controversy.
