AUBURN, Ala. Just days after the disappointment of a Super Regional exit, Head Coach Butch Thompson and the Auburn Tigers are already reshaping the roster for a 2027 College World Series run.
On Wednesday, the program landed a commitment from Georgia State transfer John Beverley, a speedy outfielder who announced his decision via social media . The addition comes at a critical time for Auburn, which is currently experiencing a flurry of roster movement as the offseason transfer window opens.
A Breakout Season for the Panthers
Beverley arrives on the Plains after a transformative sophomore campaign with Georgia State. After hitting just .182 as a freshman, the Lawrenceville, Ga., native erupted in 2026, slashing an impressive .365/.420/.473 .
While he displayed gap power with six doubles and two triples, his primary weapon is his legs. Beverley stole 32 bases in 54 games last season, showcasing the kind of top-of-the-order speed that Thompson has historically coveted . He drove in 38 runs and scored 46 times, proving to be a consistent catalyst for the Panthers’ offense.
Defensively, Beverley brings reliability and range to the outfield, posting a .971 fielding percentage. He is expected to immediately compete for the starting job in center field and the leadoff spot in the batting order . He will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Tigers .
A Direct Replacement for Carter?

The addition of Beverley is strategically timed with the departure of a key piece of Auburn’s 2026 lineup.
On Thursday, it was confirmed that starting center fielder Bristol Carter has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal . Carter was a critical part of Auburn’s recent success, hitting .298 and swiping 31 bases this past season—the third-most in a single season in school history . Carter, who also started a charitable foundation during his time on The Plains, leaves a void in both production and leadership .
While Carter’s departure stings, Beverley’s stat line looks remarkably similar: a high-average, high-on-base threat with elite stolen base numbers. He projects to slide directly into the role vacated by Carter, ensuring Auburn doesn’t lose a step on the basepaths .
Building the 2027 Roster
Beverley is the second transfer to commit to Auburn this week, joining right-handed pitcher Zach Stevens from South Alabama . Stevens, a reliever with a 2.53 ERA and a 7-1 record in 2026, brings experience to the bullpen and has one year of eligibility left .
The Tigers are currently navigating a period of transition. While several underclassmen are expected to return as part of a “nucleus” Thompson hopes to keep intact , the program has seen a trio of pitchers Saxon Roberts, Trevor Booten, and Justice de Jong enter the portal, joining Koch .
However, the acquisition of Beverley signals that Auburn intends to reload rather than rebuild. His breakout sophomore season suggests a high ceiling, and his elite speed addresses a specific need for a team looking to break through the Super Regional barrier after back-to-back appearances.
Next Steps: Beverley is expected to report to campus for summer workouts. Auburn’s 2027 schedule has yet to be released, but the Tigers will open next season with high expectations following their No. 4 overall seed in the 2026 NCAA Tournament .
