Kentucky Wildcats News: UK eyes J Batt as next Athletic Director

Happy Sunday, Big Blue Nation. The biggest story surrounding Kentucky athletics on Saturday revolved around the future leadership of the athletic department.

According to multiple reports, Kentucky is focusing on Michigan State athletic director J. Batt as the top candidate to succeed Mitch Barnhart, who is scheduled to retire in late June after 24 years as the Wildcats’ AD.

Barnhart’s run at Kentucky ranks among the most successful in school history. Since taking over in 2002, he has overseen numerous facility upgrades, coaching hires, conference championships, and national titles, helping position Kentucky as one of the premier athletic departments in the country.

Now, the spotlight has shifted to who will guide the department going forward.

Batt has quickly become a prominent name due to his reputation as one of college athletics’ top fundraisers. Before taking over at Michigan State in 2025, Batt served as athletic director at Georgia Tech, where he helped boost fundraising efforts, enhance facilities, and generate new revenue streams for the Yellow Jackets.

His background also includes significant leadership roles at Alabama, where he assisted with major fundraising campaigns and athletic department operations during one of the most dominant eras in Crimson Tide history.

While nothing is official yet, all eyes will remain on Lexington as Kentucky moves closer to naming the next leader of its athletic department.
