Why is the Phillies-Mets Game Time Today Changed? When Will it Start?

Philadelphia, PA – In a proactive move to safeguard players and fans from worsening air quality, the Philadelphia Phillies have announced a schedule change for tonight’s game against the New York Mets. The first pitch, originally set for 7:10 p.m. ET, has been moved up by one hour to 6:10 p.m. ET.

The decision, confirmed by the Phillies on Thursday afternoon, comes in response to a Code Red Air Quality Alert issued for the Philadelphia region. Smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires has drifted into the Northeastern United States, creating an “unhealthy” Air Quality Index (AQI) that is expected to deteriorate further after sunset.

According to team officials, the game was moved earlier in the evening to avoid the period when the air quality is predicted to reach its worst levels. Forecasters initially expressed confidence that conditions would improve during the day; however, a change in the forecast indicated a decline in air quality once the sun sets, prompting the league and team management to act.

“Everybody just has to speed up their routine a little bit,” said Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly in response to the timing change.

The adjustment meant a hectic afternoon for both clubs, who were already returning from the All-Star break a day earlier than the rest of the league for this exclusive ESPN matchup. To minimize exposure to the haze, both teams significantly curtailed their outdoor pregame workouts.

With the game moved up, fans are advised to adjust their travel plans accordingly. The gate schedule at Citizens Bank Park will remain largely unchanged: the Third Base and Left Field gates will open at 5:10 p.m. ET, while all other gates will open at 5:40 p.m. ET.

The game marks the official start of the second half of the 2026 MLB season. The Phillies (54-43) enter the series looking to solidify their playoff position, currently holding a Wild Card spot and trailing the Braves in the NL East. Meanwhile, the Mets (40-57) are hoping to turn around a disappointing first half.

The pitching matchup features Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola against Mets righty Christian Scott.

With the earlier start, the game which has an average duration of under three hours is expected to conclude before the air quality reaches its projected peak during the late evening hours.
