We’re officially under the 50-day mark until football returns to the Bluegrass, and Big Blue Nation is buzzing with anticipation for the Will Stein era to get underway. While we’ve all been busy dissecting the current roster and forecasting which players might break out or carve out key roles this fall, let’s hit pause on that for a moment and shift our focus to a fresh face joining the fold. That’s right Kentucky is bringing in a new player on July 19, just in time for the season ahead.
Meet Ahmir Smith, the JUCO transfer running back who’s now officially a Wildcat. Standing 5-foot-10 and weighing 204 pounds, Smith arrives from Garden City CC a program that should ring a bell for Kentucky fans. It’s the very same junior college pipeline that delivered Terry Wilson and Lonnie Johnson Jr. to Lexington, both of whom went on to leave their mark during their time in blue and white.
Smith’s most recent campaign at Garden City was productive: he piled up 322 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 74 carries, while also hauling in 14 receptions for 183 yards and three more scores through the air. Before that stint, he spent the 2024 season at Northern Illinois, where he was part of the Huskies squad that stunned No. 5 Notre Dame with a 16–14 upset early in the year. His action there was limited, however, as he logged just three carries for four yards total.
Back in his high school days, Smith was rated the 120th-best running back in the 2024 recruiting class. He starred at Calhoun County High School, where he exploded for 1,700 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns during his senior season, and he collected All-Region honors in three straight years from 2021 through 2023.
Now he steps into a Kentucky backfield that already features scholarship backs CJ Baxter, Jovantae Barnes, Jason Patterson, Tovani Mizell, and Delvecchio Alston. All in all, it’s a noteworthy mid-July addition that gives the roster even more depth as the season draws nearer.
