Those personnel decisions reached the Florida Complex League this week, where the Phillies chose to move on from one of their youngest and more intriguing infield prospects after a tough stretch in his development.
According to the official transaction log, the Phillies released 18-year-old shortstop Jose Familia last week amid a difficult offensive campaign.
The release brings Familia’s tenure with the organization to a close fewer than two years after he first surfaced as a promising international signee from the Dominican Republic. Though he never climbed into the upper tier of the system’s top prospects, scouts had pointed to his youth, physical frame, and defensive potential as reasons to believe in some long-term upside.
Familia’s difficulties at the plate that carried over from 2025 into the current season made it increasingly hard for Philadelphia to keep him on the books, even with his age working in his favor.
In his assessment, Matt Winkelman of Phillies Minor Thoughts described Familia as a slender shortstop who was assigned to the FCL before he was truly prepared, noting defensive rawness and contact issues at the plate, while also acknowledging that the teenager does not turn 19 until August and still has room to grow.
The fact that Familia is only 18 years old remains the most compelling aspect of his profile, and it seems probable that he will receive additional chances within affiliated baseball.
Nevertheless, the Phillies concluded that those opportunities would have to come elsewhere, opting to clear a roster spot while doubling down on other young infielders in the system. Familia now heads to free agency with ample time to extend his professional path, hoping that another franchise sees value in the raw physical gifts that once made him a prospect worth tracking.
