The Philadelphia Phillies are facing a clear need to bolster their roster as the 2026 MLB trade deadline approaches. Bryce Harper has acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is well aware that reinforcements are necessary.
Among the areas requiring attention outfield, bullpen, and starting pitching—the outfield presents the most pressing concern. The available options on the market are limited, and few of them inspire much confidence.
However, Jon Heyman of The New York Post reports that the Phillies have shown interest in Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Daulton Varsho, who carries a $10.75 million salary and owns a Gold Glove.
According to Heyman, Varsho is one of several players drawing interest from Philadelphia, which is actively searching for help in the outfield, bullpen, and rotation.
For Phillies followers, this connection isn’t new—Varsho has been frequently mentioned in trade rumors involving the team over the past few weeks.
One potential drawback is that Varsho bats left-handed, whereas Philadelphia might prefer a right-handed outfield bat. Still, his profile offers enough appeal for the Phillies to consider taking that chance.
Through 96 games and 324 at-bats this season, Varsho is hitting .247 with a .691 OPS and an 88 OPS+ numbers that don’t jump off the page. But in 2024, over 248 at-bats, he posted an .833 OPS and belted 20 home runs, demonstrating his capacity for sustained production.
Over the course of his major league career, the 29-year-old has compiled a .721 OPS while providing elite defense in center field. He could potentially step in as a regular replacement for Justin Crawford, who may be dealt as part of a package to address other roster needs.
Acquiring Varsho would likely involve additional roster adjustments, and as a rental who hits from the left side, he’s not a perfect fit. Still, he represents an improvement over what the Phillies currently have in the outfield, and the team is reportedly keeping him on their radar.
With increasing chatter linking the Blue Jays and Phillies in recent days, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the two clubs come together on a deal before the August 3 cutoff.
