Byron Scott, who won three NBA championships with the Lakers, recently sat down with fellow former NBA player Olden Polynice to record an episode of their podcast, Fastbreak. During the conversation, the two discussed what has followed since LeBron James joined the Philadelphia 76ers.
When the topic turned to how this move might affect LeBron James’ legacy and whether it shifts the ongoing GOAT conversation involving Michael Jordan, both Polynice and Scott agreed that it would not resolve the debate.
“No one’s doing what he’s done. So, let’s get that out of the way. And the whole goat thing, you guys know how I feel about that. Okay. It’s about respecting everybody without diminishing others,” Olden Polynice stated.
“In my personal opinion, he wins a championship. He’s elevated a little bit more in the conversation, but it’s not going to change people’s minds.”
“The Jordan fans are going to love Jordan. The Kobe fans are going to love Kobe and his fans. You can’t get them to freaking agree if the sky is blue or not. So, it doesn’t matter,” Polynice added.
“If LeBron wins one in Philly and four teams, is that going to change anybody’s mind?” asked Jay Wager, the podcast’s co-host, to which Polynice answered in the negative.
“I think it’s just going to he’s going to get more people there to say he’s the GOAT. You know, but it’s still gonna be a debate, and it’s still subjective,” Byron Scott pointed out.
“It enhances the Bron stans’ argument. That’s all it will do,” Polynice said.
“It puts him closer to an MJ as far as, you know, the way people are going to look at it. But still, you know, the one thing that’s going to always kind of set them apart as far as I’m concerned, you know, MJ got six, and he did it on six occasions. He went to the final six times, never lost,” Byron Scott added.
“For me, when you start talking about the GOAT now, I’ve kind of changed my thought process because it should be almost by decades when you start talking about the greatest players instead of this who’s the greatest of all time, because that is impossible to measure,” Scott concluded.
Polynice went on to observe that only one decade the 2010s, which included his choice to join the Heat and his return to the Cavaliers could be considered an era in which LeBron James was unquestionably the NBA’s best player. And across 24 years in the league, James has secured only four NBA championships, compared to Michael Jordan’s six.
However, Polynice entirely overlooks the fact that LeBron James has his name inscribed in the league’s record books across nearly every major statistical category. Over 23 seasons, James has posted averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists, with shooting splits of 50.7% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range.
In comparison, Michael Jordan, over 15 NBA seasons mostly with the Bulls averaged 30.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 2.3 steals, while shooting 49.7% from the floor and 32.7% from beyond the arc.
Both former NBA players appear to echo Brian Windhorst, who earlier this week expressed that five NBA titles with four different franchises would not significantly alter James’ legacy, calling it a fake factor in the discussion.
From my perspective, Michael Jordan still undeniably possessed a superior prime compared to LeBron James in terms of winning and achievement. Furthermore, Jordan was a more lethal scorer.
Yet it cannot be denied that LeBron James is the more complete player in terms of positional flexibility, and he has compiled a more impressive career when it comes to longevity. And it is plainly evident that the debate currently remains without a definitive resolution.
