The Philadelphia Phillies have received a positive development regarding starting shortstop Trea Turner, who is officially back in the starting lineup and slated to hit leadoff in tonight’s matchup against the New York Mets.
Turner was forced to leave the Phillies’ 6-4 defeat to the Mets on June 18 after being struck in the lower right calf by a pitch from Sean Manaea. Although he managed to score later in that same inning, the calf issue began to bother him defensively, ultimately leading to his exit during the third inning.
Following that contest, interim manager Don Mattingly expressed optimism that Turner would be available for this game, and the team’s schedule provided an extra layer of convenience an off day was wedged between the first two games of the Mets series due to the World Cup, affording Turner additional recovery time.
Philadelphia now looks to level the series against New York, turning to their ace, Cristopher Sanchez, to steady the ship. They will also be squaring off against right-hander Freddy Peralta, a matchup that Phillies hitters are likely pleased to see.
The first pitch at Citizens Bank Park is set for 7:15 pm ET.

Turner reclaims his customary position as Philadelphia’s leadoff hitter, marking his 54th start of the season in that role.
His production from the top of the order has been modest this year, with a slash line of .229/.284/.339, but his speed continues to be a valuable asset for the Phillies’ attack. He stands as the club’s primary stolen-base threat, providing a dynamic presence ahead of power hitters like Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper.
Overall, 2026 has been a challenging campaign for Turner, and his struggles have had a ripple effect on the lineup. Much of the difficulty has come against left-handed pitching, as evidenced by Philadelphia’s 11-17 record in games started by a southpaw.
The Phillies are counting on their shortstop to find his rhythm offensively. In his most recent full game, he tallied three hits in a June 17 loss to the Miami Marlins, offering a bright spot in an otherwise rough outing.
Philadelphia is also hoping that Turner avoids further misfortune this homestand, as he has already been forced out of two games the first came when he was hit in the right wrist during the series opener against Miami. He has otherwise started four of the team’s first five games.
All attention will be on Turner’s mobility during this contest, and the Phillies appear to be optimistic on that front. Mattingly noted that Turner was having trouble pushing off his right leg, and the team preferred to exercise caution given his injury history, which includes two separate hamstring issues one in each leg.

Philadelphia remains comfortably positioned in the National League Wild Card race, even if the NL East division crown may be out of reach. They currently hold a Wild Card berth.
However, the margin for error is slim, with several teams lurking close behind. The Phillies hold just a half-game lead over the Chicago Cubs and a one-game advantage over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Only the Mets, San Francisco Giants, and Colorado Rockies sit more than 4.0 games back of a Wild Card spot. This matchup gives Philadelphia an opportunity to push New York further down in the standings and potentially benefit from the Mets’ upcoming trade deadline decisions—New York’s starter, Freddy Peralta, has been mentioned as a possible trade piece.
Sanchez has been in excellent form recently, though he showed human vulnerability in his last outing, surrendering four runs to the Milwaukee Brewers in a 4-0 defeat. The Phillies have posted a 10-5 record when their ace takes the hill in 2026.
