According to a report on Tuesday, the Dallas Mavericks have “emerged as the leading suitor” in trade discussions for Detroit Pistons reserve guard Marcus Sasser.
By Wednesday, follow-up reports indicated that the acquisition of Sasser is essentially a done deal, with the transaction expected to be finalized as soon as the offseason trade moratorium is lifted that same day.
NBA insider Jake Fischer was the first to break the news, which has gained notable traction given the Mavericks’ clear need for backcourt depth as free agency unfolds. Marc Stein later corroborated the report and provided further context on Wednesday.

Sasser is a Dallas-area native who attended Red Oak High School, located just south of Dallas, from 2015 to 2019. He later played college basketball at the University of Houston under defensive-minded head coach Kelvin Sampson. The move back to Texas would also likely afford Sasser a more consistent role in the rotation than he experienced during his first three NBA seasons with the Pistons.
The return package Detroit would receive from Dallas for Sasser was not immediately specified. However, with the Pistons reportedly showing interest in Oklahoma City Thunder guard Isaiah Joe, both the Sasser deal and the previously reported Santi Aldama trade could potentially be consolidated into a larger multi-team arrangement to facilitate Detroit’s pursuit.

Sasser appeared in only 38 games during the 2025–26 season, averaging just 12 minutes per contest a drop from the 19-plus minutes he logged as a rookie in 2023–24. Over the past two seasons, he has posted a three-point shooting percentage of roughly 40%.
