The St. Louis Cardinals delivered a dominant performance on Friday night, shutting out the San Diego Padres 6-0 behind a breakout offensive moment from JJ Wetherholt and a stellar outing from pitcher Michael McGreevy. The Cardinals combined timely hitting with excellent pitching to secure the convincing victory on the road.
Wetherholt provided the game’s biggest highlight during a crucial fifth inning. With the bases loaded, he sent a ground ball into right field for what initially appeared to be a routine RBI single. However, Padres star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. misplayed the ball after overrunning it, allowing it to roll all the way to the wall. The mistake opened the door for every runner to cross the plate, turning the play into an unusual Little League-style grand slam. Officially, Tatis Jr. was charged with a three-run error, marking his first defensive miscue of the season.

The Cardinals continued to build momentum later in the inning. Nolan Gorman added another run with an RBI single, while Alec Burleson came home on a sacrifice fly to extend St. Louis’ advantage even further. The offensive burst gave the Cardinals more than enough support thanks to the outstanding work from their pitching staff.
McGreevy turned in one of the best starts of his young career. The right-hander earned the win after striking out a career-high nine batters over six dominant innings. He allowed just one hit during the outing, a fourth-inning single by Jackson Merrill, while also issuing two walks. McGreevy consistently kept Padres hitters off balance and controlled the pace of the game from the opening inning until his exit.
The Cardinals bullpen ensured San Diego never mounted a comeback attempt. Relievers Gordon Graceffo and Ryne Stanek combined for the final three innings without surrendering a hit. Their clean work preserved the shutout and completed an impressive overall pitching performance for St. Louis.
On the opposite side, Padres starter Griffin Canning struggled in his second appearance of the season since returning from the Achilles injury that sidelined him last June. Canning pitched 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and six earned runs. He also recorded five strikeouts and walked two batters before being removed. The loss dropped him to 0-1 on the year as he continues working his way back into form.
The victory improved the Cardinals’ momentum heading into the remainder of the series. St. Louis is scheduled to send right-hander Dusty May to the mound on Saturday. May enters the matchup with a 3-3 record and a 5.15 ERA. The Padres are expected to counter with Randy Vasquez, who has been strong this season with a 3-1 record and a 3.20 ERA.
