Mark Pope’s recruiting operation at Kentucky finds itself in a peculiar in-between space, straddling the current roster and the next wave of talent. The Wildcats already secured an early coup for the following season by landing five-star wing Ryan Hampton, yet with an open scholarship still begging to be filled for the present squad, each prospect Pope and his assistants evaluate carries the weight of addressing two timelines at once.
That said, one clear outlier stands apart from that dynamic: five-star big man Paul Osaruyi. The highly touted power forward has made no secret of his plan to stay put in the 2027 cycle, and as suitors begin circling with greater intensity, Pope and his Kentucky crew are making it unmistakably clear that they’re ramping up their pursuit in a major way.
Osaruyi picked up his offer from Kentucky earlier this year, but during this past weekend’s Peach Jam action, the Wildcats’ presence was impossible to miss. Pope himself made the trip, joined by assistant coach Mo Williams nicknamed “The Closer” for good reason to get an extended look at Osaruyi in person.
Kentucky is still very much in the mix for several other 2027 prospects, a number of whom operate in the same frontcourt spaces as Osaruyi. But what sets Osaruyi apart from that group, according to KSR, is that a visit to Lexington is already firmly on the calendar.

And if there’s any reason for Big Blue Nation to feel a heightened sense of anticipation, this is it. Osaruyi checks in as the No. 8 overall prospect in the country per 247Sports, and landing his pledge would immediately kick Kentucky’s future class into another gear entirely.
At 6-foot-10 and 220 pounds, he’s a classic four-man who possesses the frame and skill set to slide over to the five should the situation call for it. At Peach Jam, he showcased exactly why he’s so highly regarded, proving to be a defensive disruptor while displaying a natural bounce that allows him to throw down highlight-reel slams with regularity.
His hands are sure and his mobility is impressive for a player his size. Paired alongside Hampton—who brings his own brand of shiftiness and shot-creation prowess the Wildcats’ projected lineup for 2027-28 would instantly shape up as the most flexible and positionless group Pope has assembled during his tenure.
Kentucky hasn’t sealed the deal just yet, and North Carolina looms as a notable competitor in this race. Still, the prevailing sentiment surrounding the Wildcats’ chances is decidedly optimistic.
A Promising Vibe Surrounding Kentucky’s Pursuit
“Been talking to Coach Mark Pope and Mo Williams,” Osaruyi told KSR. “They’ve been trying to get me down there for a minute… They’re also trying to be a great mentor. Telling me what I got to do on the court. Just giving me feedback whenever I need it, criticism or whatever I need.”
As for that planned visit to Lexington, Osaruyi confirmed it’s “locked in, for sure.”
Hampton provides a strong foundation regardless of which players ultimately return from this year’s squad, but adding Osaruyi to the equation would almost certainly thrust the future Wildcats into the thick of early preseason buzz. This one carries serious weight, BBN, and judging by the way this staff is operating, they’re fully aware of what’s at stake.
