Kentucky Football freshman Matt Ponatoski has officially reported to Lexington for the start of preseason camp, signaling his intention to continue advancing his football career rather than immediately transitioning to professional baseball after being selected in the 18th round of the MLB draft last weekend.
Still, Mike Dyer, a high school sports correspondent for WCPO in Cincinnati, reports that the former Moeller standout who excelled in both baseball and football—has not completely closed the door on joining the Cincinnati Reds organization.
With Kenny Minchey transferring in from Notre Dame, the Wildcats already have their starter locked in at quarterback.
Even so, Ponatoski possesses the raw talent and a viable route to make a strong push for the QB2 role during the upcoming season.
His exceptional athletic versatility, paired with the capacity to work effectively from the pocket, could prove highly valuable should Minchey face injury or underperform.
Should Ponatoski ultimately opt to pursue baseball with the Reds instead of taking the field for Kentucky football, it would represent a significant setback for the program both in the immediate term and down the road.
Encouragingly, however, all current indications suggest that Ponatoski is planning to suit up for UK and pursue dual-sport participation in both football and baseball.
