Earlier this week, Florida State finally ended its recruiting drought, but that small victory has been overshadowed by a wave of struggles since the spring began. The Seminoles are having difficulty building their #Tribe27 class, and the coaching staff is no longer a serious contender for many elite prospects. For a program with Florida State’s proud reputation, falling short in any area is simply not acceptable.

Even more troubling is that FSU can no longer rely on keeping local talent at home. One of the top wide receivers in the 2027 class lives roughly 15 minutes from campus. Yet instead of staying in Tallahassee, this promising recruit has chosen to join a rival program.
Four-Star WR from Tallahassee Picks Clemson Over FSU
On Wednesday, four-star wide receiver Jamarin Simmons announced his commitment to Clemson, choosing the Tigers over Florida State, Auburn, and Tennessee. Given that Simmons is practically in the Seminoles’ own backyard, this reflects poorly on head coach Mike Norvell—especially considering FSU’s current state. The Seminoles weren’t late to the chase; Simmons received an offer from FSU nearly two years ago and has visited campus multiple times, including two trips this year.
Regardless, losing an elite recruit who lives so close to campus is more than just disappointing. The frustration deepens knowing that Simmons won’t be going just anywhere—he’ll be playing for a rival of Florida State for the coming years.
During his junior season at Godby High School, Simmons recorded 59 receptions for 932 yards and 14 touchdowns. He also threw for one touchdown and ran for another. On defense, he contributed 25 tackles, one tackle for loss, six pass deflections, and three interceptions.
Simmons posted 100+ receiving yards in three games, including a season-high nine catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns in a 43–36 loss to Florida State University School on September 1. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound wide receiver is ranked as the No. 106 overall prospect, the No. 18 wide receiver, and the No. 12 recruit in Florida for the 2027 class according to the 247Sports Composite Ratings. With Simmons off the board, Florida State will now turn its attention to four-star Sean Green, three-star Cam Wade, three-star Arnold Mugerwa, three-star Majay Thompson, and three-star Antwan Lockett.
