Currently, Kentucky Baseball has its full focus locked on the Morgantown regional. After slipping into the NCAA Tournament as one of the last four teams in on the bubble, Nick Mingione and his squad are looking to build on their earlier successes and make a late-season push.
But even with a looming matchup against Wake Forest and their standout ace Chris Levonas, Mingione hasn’t slowed down on the recruiting front. Kentucky has secured its first transfer portal addition of the cycle: outfielder Brody Chrisman.
Chrisman made the announcement himself on social media, sharing a photo of himself in a Wildcats uniform along with a quote sure to energize Big Blue Nation:
“Excited to announce my commitment to the University of Kentucky! God is good. Go Wildcats!”
The First New Wildcat of the Season
Likely the first of many incoming Wildcats, Chrisman transfers in from Akron. As a former Zip, the step up in competition might take some adjusting, but Chrisman brings more than enough talent and potential to make up for it once he arrives in Lexington.
After spending three intermittent seasons with the Purdue Boilermakers—missing time due to a redshirt—Chrisman started in right field for Akron this past season and built a statistical résumé worthy of the leap to the SEC.
Not only did he go error-free across 55 total games as a junior (remember, he redshirted), but his 13 home runs and 23 stolen bases, alongside a .355/.453/.603 batting line, made the seasoned veteran a hot commodity in the portal.
Standing 6-foot-3 and just over 200 pounds, he also has a powerful frame that should fit nicely toward the top of the Wildcats’ batting order.
An Instant Impact Player
Despite an undeniably disappointing season at Kentucky Proud Park, a prospect like Chrisman recalls the heights of Mingione’s tenure in Lexington. It’s a major win for the program’s future, even if the current situation isn’t ideal.
With this first domino officially falling, expect Mingione and his staff to get busy filling roster gaps in the coming weeks. An offseason full of inevitable turnover is ahead, BBN—try not to get too attached.
That said, if players like Chrisman keep signing with the blue and white, I doubt anyone will mind constantly finding new talent.
No matter how the postseason plays out, Cats fans may rightly view this season’s struggles more as a temporary bump than a sign of decline.
