Phillies Named Best Trade Fit for Twins’ $100M Star Outfielder

After enduring a disastrous beginning to their season, the Philadelphia Phillies have unquestionably staged an impressive turnaround. Currently sitting second in the National League East with a 40-33 record, they have also taken three of their last four contests and presently occupy the second wild card position in the National League.

Now that the Phillies have steadied their campaign, they are positioning themselves to act as buyers as the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline approaches. With several roster deficiencies to address before the cutoff, they are aiming to position themselves for a genuine push come autumn.

Among their most pressing needs is adding another premier performer to their outfield mix. Consequently, they are now being identified as a prime match for one of the sport’s most prominent trade chips.

Phillies Labeled as Ideal Destination for Twins Star Byron Buxton

In a recent ESPN feature, Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan compiled their rankings of the premier trade candidates available at this year’s deadline. Included on that list was Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, a name that has circulated in trade speculation for quite some time, particularly given the Twins’ considerable distance from legitimate contention.

McDaniel and Passan went on to suggest possible destinations should the Twins choose to make Buxton available, with the Phillies leading the enumeration of prospective suitors.

“Minnesota appears poised for another active deadline and could lean toward a near-total rebuild, and if anything might shift Buxton’s perspective, it’s the Twins’ competitive horizon. Should that occur, his likelihood of being dealt would more closely resemble Skubal’s; and with Buxton offering multiple years of team control alongside a reasonable contract, he would command a substantial return,” McDaniel and Passan wrote. “Best fits: Phillies, Padres, Diamondbacks, Braves, Rays, Cardinals, Yankees, Rangers.”

Given Philadelphia’s clear requirement for another standout outfielder, it would be entirely logical for them to aggressively pursue Buxton this season. He would provide them with another formidable power bat in the lineup certainly not a disadvantage for a Phillies club intent on making a significant impression this year.

Across 63 games with the Twins this season, Buxton has already compiled 23 home runs, 36 RBIs, and a .275 batting average. This follows a 2025 campaign in which the 12-year veteran established personal bests with 35 homers and 83 RBIs over 126 appearances. Production of this caliber would represent a major acquisition for Philadelphia should they manage to land him.

Not only is he an exceptional offensive contributor, but he also represents a long-term investment for the franchise, as he is currently in the fifth year of a seven-year, $100 million contract further enhancing his desirability.
