BREAKING NEWS: Phillies Set to Reunite With a Postseason Ghost in Red Sox Showdown

The Boston Red Sox have finalized their starting rotation for the upcoming series against the Philadelphia Phillies, with left-hander Ranger Suarez slated to pitch the finale on Thursday, May 14, at 6:45 p.m. EDT at Fenway Park.

Phillies To Face Former Postseason Hero in Red Sox Series

Suarez will face his former team for the first time since signing a five-year, $130 million deal with Boston. He has performed well in his first seven starts for the Red Sox, posting a 2-2 record and a 2.77 ERA. The 30-year-old has a 21.6% strikeout rate and a 6.8% walk rate, consistent with his career averages.

The Phillies have promoted top pitching prospect Andrew Painter to fill the rotation spot. Painter is also scheduled to pitch against Boston, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the series.

Ranger Suarez’s Time with the Phillies
Suarez began his career in Philadelphia, spending his first eight seasons there. From 2022 to 2025, he became a rotation regular, making 104 starts with a 3.59 ERA over 588.1 innings. His 12.2 fWAR ranked fourth on the team behind Zack Wheeler (19.5), Aaron Nola (14.2), and Cristopher Sanchez (12.8).

Suarez earned an NL All-Star nod in 2024, finishing 12-8 with a 3.46 ERA in 27 starts. He was also a postseason standout, going 4-1 with a 1.48 ERA in 11 appearances (eight starts), with the Phillies going 8-3 in those games. Notably, two of the three losses were scoreless outings (2023 NLCS Game 3, 2024 NLDS Game 3). His only postseason loss came against the Diamondbacks in Game 7 of the NLCS.

His durability and playoff success made him a highly sought-after free agent. When he signed with Boston, the Phillies received a fourth-round pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

How the Phillies Have Tried to Replace Suarez
After Suarez left, Philadelphia largely kept their rotation intact, extending Jesus Luzardo and Cristopher Sanchez rather than making many external additions. Sanchez has continued his strong form from 2025, when he finished second in NL Cy Young voting.

Luzardo, however, has struggled in the first year of his six-year extension. He’s dealing with a 58.9% strand rate and a .386 BABIP, resulting in a 5.98 ERA that far exceeds his 3.21 xERA (based on batted-ball data). While that offers little comfort to Phillies fans, there’s hope Luzardo can rebound.

With Wheeler still rehabbing from thoracic outlet surgery, Philadelphia turned to top prospect Andrew Painter. Once Wheeler returned, the club chose Painter over Taijuan Walker (in the final year of a four-year, $72 million deal) as the fifth starter.

Painter has had an uneven season. After looking solid in two of his first three outings, he has lost his last four starts. He is now 1-4 with a 6.89 ERA and a 4.87 FIP, with opponents slashing .321/.375/.504 against him.

Painter’s struggles have put the Phillies in a difficult position. Despite a 19-22 record, they’ve played better under interim manager Don Mattingly, going 10-3 though two of those losses came in Painter’s starts.

The upcoming Phillies–Red Sox series will reveal much about each team’s offseason strategy. Both are trying to recover from poor starts, and a series win could help either club climb back into postseason contention.
