Dan Gilbert Invades Detroit: How Pistons Fans Can Shut Down the Cavs Owner’s Big Gamble

In Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, the Cleveland Cavaliers faced the Detroit Pistons having lost all five of their road playoff games so far. On the positive side, they had used homecourt advantage in the first round to win every game at Rocket Arena. The downside was that advancing to the conference finals required winning at least one game away from home.

On Wednesday night, the Cavs finally achieved that feat, snatching Game 5 from the Pistons in dramatic fashion. They overcame a nine-point deficit in the final three minutes of regulation, forced overtime, and secured a 117–113 victory.

A key factor may have been the strong Cavaliers fan presence at Little Caesars Arena. Owner Dan Gilbert personally arranged for “a couple hundred Cavs fans” to be bused in, fed, hosted at a reception, and given tickets, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

Donovan Mitchell acknowledged after the game that this gesture shifted the momentum. It not only impressed Mitchell but also made the team feel more comfortable on the road. Though Detroit is relatively close to Cleveland and Gilbert wasn’t obligated to intervene, his investment in the team proved meaningful in a tight series where every edge counts.
