Although public opinion on Duren has cooled, none other than LeBron James has stepped up in his defense—an interesting development given the Los Angeles Lakers have often been mentioned as a potential landing spot for the young big man.

What Did LeBron James Say About Jalen Duren?

“Jalen Duren had a great year,” James said on Mind The Game. “All-Star this year. And it was his first—I think I remember a quote from, I think it was Jarrett Allen maybe last year or the year before, when they lost to the Knicks. And he said, ‘Maybe the lights were a little too bright.’—You have to go through something at times.”

Duren has just completed his second playoff appearance with the Pistons. Despite gaining some experience during last year’s six-game first-round exit, he appeared to take a step back when the stakes were highest.

Over 14 games, Duren shot 51.4% from the field, averaging 10.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks per contest.

In LeBron’s view, Duren will bounce back. At just 22 years old, he still has plenty of time before reaching his prime in the NBA.

Duren’s strong regular season should help him command a sizable contract in free agency. The key question is whether he will land a maximum deal.

After Duren and the Pistons failed to reach an extension before the 2025 deadline, rumors loosely connected him to the Lakers. Still, for Lakers fans hoping Duren falls into their lap, that remains wishful thinking.

Not only are the Pistons still intent on keeping Duren for the long term, but his price tag will also be steep after all, he is an All-Star who was among the league’s best centers during the 2025-2026 season. The Detroit big man averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and nearly one block per game.
