Collin Klein lands top-rated local football recruit for Kansas State Wildcats

Collin Klein is the kind of head coach who will search for talented football recruits just about anywhere, but his true priority is securing the best players within Kansas State’s own regional territory. Since taking over the Wildcats, he has consistently stressed the importance of focusing on the areas closest to Manhattan.

“We’re going to have a seven-hour radius,” Klein stated earlier this year. “That loop includes Denver, up through Omaha, Des Moines, Kansas City, St. Louis, and down through Tulsa and Oklahoma City.” Klein put that philosophy into action on Sunday when K-State landed a commitment from Cooper Ohnmacht. A 6-foot, 185-pound athlete from Great Bend, Ohnmacht is the highest-rated recruit in Kansas for the 2027 class.

He’s a four-star prospect expected to play safety or possibly multiple positions at the collegiate level. Ohnmacht chose K-State following a campus visit, turning down offers from Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Minnesota, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Wisconsin. Both 247Sports and Rivals rank him as the top prospect in the state.

Sunday was a big day for K-State recruiting beyond Ohnmacht as well. Correll Buckhalter, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound running back from Colleyville, Texas, also committed to the Wildcats over the weekend.
