Kentucky Football continued to build momentum in its 2027 recruiting class on Friday, securing a commitment from three-star edge rusher Jaylen Mercer.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect from Cincinnati, Ohio, picked the Wildcats over a strong list of offers, including Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Oregon, Ole Miss, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Louisville, West Virginia, Arizona State, Boston College, Cincinnati, and others.
According to the 247 Sports Composite, Mercer is rated the No. 556 recruit nationally, the No. 51 edge rusher, and the No. 22 player in Ohio.
Kentucky’s recruitment of Mercer began years earlier, with the Wildcats first offering him in December 2023 during the tenure of former head coach Mark Stoops and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow. Mercer took an unofficial visit to Lexington in March 2024, which helped lay the groundwork for a strong early connection.
Even after Stoops was let go and Marrow left for Louisville, the new Kentucky coaching staff continued to make Mercer a priority, keeping consistent lines of communication open throughout the process. That effort paid off, as the Wildcats landed a commitment from a player with notable potential and physical gifts.

Mercer had originally planned to visit Kentucky this weekend, but those plans were postponed following the tragic death of Wildcats teammate Nic Smith. Despite the scheduling change, the strength of Kentucky’s relationship with Mercer was enough to secure his pledge.
With Mercer on board, Kentucky continues to bolster its 2027 class with size, athleticism, and skill, reinforcing the future of its defensive front.
