In a recent article for The Stein Line, Marc Stein provided an update on the latest trade discussions happening around the NBA. While the full piece is worth reading for all the details, Stein had some notable information regarding the Detroit Pistons.
It’s well known that the Pistons’ front office has strong ties to Trey Murphy III. Back in 2021, when Trajan Langdon was the general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans, he traded up to select Murphy. Likewise, Troy Weaver now the Pelicans’ Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations was instrumental in drafting several of Detroit’s current young players during his time there. If ever there was a perfect match, this seems to be it.
Stein reported that this is the first time the Pelicans’ new front office, led by Joe Dumars, has genuinely been open to listening to offers for Murphy. According to Stein, the two teams known to have expressed interest in the 25-year-old sharpshooter are Detroit and Indiana. Given that Stein is reporting this, it’s safe to assume Detroit’s interest in Murphy is legitimate.
Stein also noted that Detroit and Minnesota are among the teams showing interest in Kyrie Irving. However, with Masai Ujiri now leading the Mavericks’ front office, there is reportedly excitement about keeping Irving in Dallas.

With the NBA Draft about a week and a half away and free agency set to begin in two and a half weeks, the rumor mill is heating up. Detroit has the assets to entice New Orleans into a deal if Langdon decides to make a move.
Stein closed his piece with a sharp observation: that’s two shooters linked to the Pistons in the same article. For a team coming off a 60-win season that ended in the second round of the playoffs, Detroit clearly knows what it needs. Thank goodness, Marc.
