Tobias Harris Meeting With Five Teams In Free Agency

The Pistons have publicly expressed their desire to bring Tobias Harris back, but no agreement was reached during the exclusive negotiation period that lasted over two weeks. As free agency begins, the veteran forward is set to hold discussions with five different teams, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.

The specific teams Harris will meet with, as well as the format of those meetings, remain unclear. However, Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line had previously named the Spurs as a possible destination of interest for Harris.

The Hornets Need to Make a Run at Tobias Harris in Free Agency

Now approaching his 34th birthday next month, Harris has been a key contributor to Detroit’s significant turnaround since joining the organization on a two-year, $52MM deal prior to the 2024/25 season. He is regarded as an essential presence in the locker room and on the floor, and he finished as the team’s second-highest scorer during their playoff run.

Harris delivered steady production in 2025/26, posting averages of 13.3 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 0.9 steals per game, with shooting splits of .469/.368/.866 across 63 regular-season contests, logging 27.7 minutes per night—numbers that closely mirrored his output from the previous year. Both teammates and head coach J.B. Bickerstaff frequently pointed to Harris as the embodiment of professionalism, with Bickerstaff repeatedly calling the 15-year veteran his “safety blanket.”

In March, Bickerstaff praised Harris extensively, emphasizing his reliability in any scenario and his consistent ability to come through when the team needs him most, as covered by Aidan Chacon of SI.com. The coach described that trust as the highest form of recognition and reaffirmed Harris’s importance to both his own coaching and the squad overall.

Although Harris’s willingness to engage with other organizations suggests he is at least considering the possibility of moving on from Detroit, these discussions do not necessarily eliminate the chance of his return. The Pistons retain his Early Bird rights, which would allow them to offer a more lucrative contract than most competing teams, yet the absence of a signed deal thus far keeps the door open for a potential departure.
