The early optimism surrounding Kevin Durant’s arrival with the Houston Rockets is already showing signs of strain. Houston entered the 2025-26 campaign with considerable promise, but the season concluded on a sour note after a first-round postseason elimination at the hands of the Los Angeles Lakers. In the weeks since, conjecture regarding Durant’s commitment to the organization beyond the near term has only grown louder.
According to various sources, several franchises have already reached out to Houston to gauge the feasibility of acquiring Durant during the upcoming offseason, with the Detroit Pistons emerging as one of the suitors. As NBA insider Brett Siegel notes, Detroit has looked into the viability of teaming Durant with their cornerstone player Cade Cunningham, though these internal deliberations have yet to evolve into substantive negotiations.
“As of now, no sustained or active dialogue has taken place regarding Durant being made available via trade. The Pistons have entertained the notion of adding him alongside Cade, but those discussions haven’t moved past the initial phase,” Siegel stated.
Houston has already been party to high-stakes trade conversations featuring Durant. Previous reporting indicated that the Rockets, Boston Celtics, and Pistons had examined a massive three-team arrangement, though that framework fell apart when Boston ultimately dealt Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in a separate major move.
Under that hypothetical alignment, Durant would have been redirected to Detroit, while Houston would have received Brown, and Boston would have acquired Alperen Sengun.
For the time being, Durant is still on Houston’s roster. Nevertheless, questions about his tenure persist. The Rockets now face a pivotal choice: either stay the course with their existing group heading into 2026-27, or leverage Durant’s considerable market value ahead of his potential unrestricted free agency in 2027.
