A Major League Baseball player wishes a top former fan played for Phillies

Bryce Harper may have come up through Las Vegas and built his name over seven seasons with the Washington Nationals, but his true baseball identity is firmly rooted in Philadelphia. The future Hall of Famer captures the very essence of what it means to wear a Phillies uniform and connect with that fanbase bringing a raw, unmistakable fire and an unstoppable energy that feels right at home in Citizens Bank Park. He’s been embraced as one of their own, even if he wasn’t born there, which only makes you wonder what the reaction would be if a homegrown talent were standing right next to him.

Prior to the American League’s shutout victory over the National League in Tuesday night’s 2026 MLB All-Star Game, Harper didn’t hold back when discussing Kevin McGonigle, the Detroit Tigers infielder who hails from Delaware County. The two-time MVP made it clear he’d prefer to see the AL Rookie of the Year frontrunner in different colors, knowing full well the emotional weight that would carry for the local faithful.

“He’s had a great career thus far, and I said it the other day, I wish he was a Phillie just cause he was from here and everything else,” Harper told reporters, as captured by FOX29 Philly’s Jeff Skversky. “I asked him the other day, ‘where were you at in ’22 {NL pennant-winning campaign}’…. and he said ‘we were in the stands yelling at all the other people for you.’ I think mindset, things like that, you could tell the type of person he is. And it fits Philly.”

The Phillies actually had a chance to select McGonigle during the opening round of the 2023 MLB Draft, but president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and his front office instead opted for shortstop Aidan Miller with the 27th overall pick. That top-30 prospect has since undergone a back procedure, which will likely push back his major league arrival. Detroit, meanwhile, grabbed McGonigle ten picks later and have since positioned him as the cornerstone of their future.

Just under three weeks into his big-league career, the 21-year-old inked an eight-year, $150 million extension and has wasted no time validating the Tigers’ investment. Through 413 plate appearances, he’s slashing .283/.392/.420 with eight homers, 34 RBIs, 11 steals, and an .812 OPS.

McGonigle didn’t record a hit in his All-Star debut, but there will be many more chances ahead—and Harper will be paying attention. Though they may never share a dugout, the mutual appreciation these two have for Philadelphia is undeniable and runs deep.
