Recall a few years ago, when speculation kept swirling that the Philadelphia Phillies had their eyes on trading for Mason Miller, back when he was still with the Oakland Athletics?
Ultimately, Miller ended up being moved to the San Diego Padres in a deal that, at the time, made perfect sense for the A’s to pull the trigger on.
With Leo De Vries coming back in that exchange, there wasn’t much incentive for the Phillies or any other MLB club to match what San Diego was prepared to surrender.

Now skip ahead to mid-July 2026, and with the Padres potentially looking to move on from certain players, it would be entirely logical if Miller found himself on the move once more. A writer from Heavy.com has floated him as a possible trade piece, and it wouldn’t catch me off guard if Philadelphia decided to re-enter the conversation.
“Mason Miller, San Diego Padres (Contract Details: Final year, $4 million). AJ Preller hasn’t exactly shut down trade chatter, keeping the possibility alive that the Padres could go either way as buyers or sellers when the deadline arrives. Miller brings serious heat and ranks among the league’s save leaders this season. When everything settles, Miller is going to be a major factor for whichever team ends up with him,” Caleb Kerney wrote.
The real question for the Padres, the Phillies, or any other suitor is what San Diego would actually be targeting in return at this stage.
Given what the Padres originally gave up to acquire him, I find it hard to believe they’d part with Miller unless they’re blown away by a substantial offer.
