Auburn’s head football coach promises to make sure the 2025 nightmare isn’t repeated

Auburn fans hardly need to be told what last season’s record looked like 5-7, in case anyone forgot or that just about every contest seemed to slip away in the final moments, with the opposition coming out on top.

That pattern has defined Auburn football for the past five years, each ending with more losses than wins. But just how unlucky have the Tigers been in games decided by a single score? Well, brace yourselves, Auburn faithful, because the numbers put them near the very top.

CBS Sports recently examined which teams fared best in one-score matchups Arizona State, surprisingly, went 5-1 in those situations last year while Auburn’s results were far less favorable. Of their seven defeats, six came by eight points or fewer, which led the entire country by a margin of two games over Arkansas and Penn State, both of whom had five such losses.

Alex Golesh has a clear focus to make sure Auburn's nightmare 2025 isn't repeated

The root of those close defeats, as Tom Fornelli points out, wasn’t really turnovers it was offensive futility, something fans witnessed all too often.

He argues that it wasn’t so much misfortune as it was a profoundly ineffective attack. Auburn’s elite defense kept them within striking distance in so many tight contests, yet the offense couldn’t hold up its end. Even with the wild overtime loss to Vanderbilt, the defense allowed more than 27 points just once in SEC play. The real issue was the offense’s inability to generate enough points to seal those games. That’s exactly why Alex Golesh has taken over the play-calling duties. So if the Tigers manage to turn things around in 2026 and improve on their 1-7 conference mark, it will likely stem from a more potent offense rather than some statistical correction in fortune.

Alex Golesh off to nightmare start at Auburn that's concerning for 2026 and beyond

Time and again, the opportunities Jackson Arnold and the offense received from the defensive unit went wasted, as Auburn struggled to produce points against SEC opponents. The low point came in November at Jordan-Hare Stadium, when a 10-3 defeat to Kentucky effectively closed the Hugh Freeze era.

Should Golesh succeed in reversing the Tigers’ fortunes in these narrow margins, Auburn could very well post its first winning season since Gus Malzahn roamed the sideline.
