The Miami Hurricanes have developed a clear pattern of securing high-profile quarterbacks through the transfer portal, and it seems they had their sights set on Pitt’s Mason Heintschel as their next target.
Two years ago, Cam Ward made the move to Miami. Last season, Carson Beck followed suit. This time around, Duke’s Darian Mensah has reportedly inked a lucrative deal to join the Hurricanes. Yet according to Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi, Miami’s initial preference was Heintschel.
To be clear, the rules prohibit teams from extending offers to players who haven’t officially entered the portal. Still, some online voices have questioned why Miami would prioritize Heintschel, but the reasoning is fairly straightforward. Heintschel would have given them two years of eligibility, likely at a more manageable cost compared to what is probably a one-year arrangement with Mensah.
Heintschel’s freshman campaign at Pitt was nothing to overlook. He connected on 63.6% of his throws, accumulating 2,354 yards with 16 touchdowns against eight interceptions.
Hailing from Oregon, Ohio, just outside Toledo, the young quarterback chose to remain at his local Clay High School instead of transferring to a prominent private program, and he’s now showing that same commitment by staying with Pitt.
With his loyalty and potential, Heintschel could very well steer the Panthers toward significant success—and Miami, it appears, was eager to get a share of that.
