As the Philadelphia Phillies push forward in their effort to maintain strong play and close the gap on the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, the front office is expected to take an aggressive approach as the trade deadline approaches.
Despite a rough beginning to the season, the Phillies have staged a remarkable resurgence and have ranked among baseball’s top-performing teams since May. Philadelphia has recently hovered around 10 games above .500, which marks a dramatic turnaround considering they sat 10 games below that threshold not long ago.
As the club begins pinpointing areas that could use reinforcement, the starting rotation emerges as a potential target. This season, the rotation has essentially been conceding one spot on a regular basis, which is less than ideal for a team with division-title aspirations.
While he wouldn’t fill the fifth-starter role, one arm who could significantly elevate the overall quality of the rotation is Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal. With the Tigers reportedly open to dealing him, it makes sense for every contending club to at least explore what it would take to land him.
Even though adding another frontline starter isn’t an obvious necessity for Philadelphia, bringing in Skubal would make their rotation a truly intimidating group come October. Below is a hypothetical swap that could bring him to the City of Brotherly Love.

Though Skubal is under team control only through the end of the current season, the asking price and the expected bidding competition will likely drive his cost quite high.
This year, Skubal has posted a 6-5 record with a 2.83 ERA and 98 strikeouts across 82.2 innings pitched. Even after missing time earlier in the season due to an arm issue, the southpaw has continued to deliver excellent results for Detroit.
Regrettably, the Tigers have underachieved considerably in 2026, and a partial reset may be in order. With Detroit unlikely to reach the postseason, allowing a talent like Skubal to depart in free agency without receiving anything in return would be a poor outcome.
For the Phillies, while bullpen help might be their most immediate need, acquiring Skubal would create a formidable top-three in the rotation alongside Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sanchez. It could also give Philadelphia the flexibility to shift Aaron Nola or Jesus Luzardo to relief work, bolstering that unit for the postseason.
Yes, parting with two of their top prospects in Wood and Renteria would represent a significant sacrifice, but if Skubal is genuinely on the market, it’s a move the Phillies owe it to themselves to at least pursue.
