PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies acquired three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants on Monday in a deadline-day trade that brings one of baseball’s premier contact hitters to a lineup in desperate need of a spark .
The Phillies also received right-handed reliever Caleb Kilian in the deal, while sending pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to the Giants . The trade was completed ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline .
Arraez, 29, is enjoying a resurgent season in San Francisco, leading the National League with a .324 batting average through 105 games . The four-time All-Star has 23 doubles, seven triples, four home runs, 43 RBIs and 10 stolen bases . His .360 on-base percentage would directly address a Phillies offense that ranks among the worst in the majors in on-base percentage .
“A contact-based approach will aid a lineup built around sluggers hitting .250,” wrote The Athletic’s Andy McCullough, giving the Phillies an ‘A’ grade for the move .
The Phillies entered the trade deadline having dropped nine of their last 13 games, with their lineup struggling to generate consistent offense . Arraez, who leads all active players with a .318 career batting average, is hitting .382 with runners in scoring position this season .
His elite bat-to-ball skills are a stark contrast to Philadelphia’s free-swinging approach. Arraez has struck out just 236 times over his entire eight-year career and ranks second in the majors in batting average this season behind Houston’s Yordan Alvarez (.330) . His 4.5 percent strikeout rate is the lowest in MLB .
The acquisition will require an infield realignment. Arraez has insisted on remaining at second base, the position he returned to this season with San Francisco after serving primarily as a first baseman the previous two years . Multiple reports indicate the Phillies plan to use Arraez as their primary second baseman, potentially shifting Bryson Stott to third base, Alec Bohm to first base and Bryce Harper to the outfield .
Arraez’s defense at second base has also improved significantly this season. He ranks among MLB leaders with +10 Outs Above Average, tied for the ninth-best at any position . His offseason work with personal trainer Rainer Olmedo and the daily tutelage of Giants infield guru Ron Washington contributed to the defensive renaissance .
The Phillies have been among the worst teams in baseball in batting average and on-base percentage this season, making Arraez an ideal target . With a lineup that had “dwindled to 2 1/2 good hitters,” according to The Athletic, Philadelphia needed an infusion of talent .
“Did you really think Dave Dombrowski wasn’t going to trade for an infielder?” The Athletic’s analysis noted, referring to the Phillies’ president of baseball operations. “Arraez addresses those issues as well as any readily available player on the market” .
Arraez is playing on a one-year, $12 million contract signed with the Giants in February and is slated to become a free agent after the season . He previously played for the Minnesota Twins (2019-2022), Miami Marlins (2023-2024), and San Diego Padres (2024-2025) .
For San Francisco, the return centers on Marquez, the Phillies’ No. 4-ranked prospect . The 20-year-old right-hander has posted a 1.68 ERA with 14.2 strikeouts per nine innings across 59 innings at High-A Jersey Shore . The Giants received an “A” grade from ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle for the trade .
“Arraez was on an expiring deal, and while Kilian was a useful performer in the Giants’ lackluster bullpen, folding him into the trade is more than worth it for a prospect of Marquez’s caliber,” Doolittle wrote .
Gair, also a right-handed pitcher from Jersey Shore, throws a fastball that reaches 102 mph and is seen as a potential high-leverage reliever if he improves his control .
The Giants held Arraez out of the lineup since Saturday due to cramps in what was termed a precautionary move heading into the trade deadline . Kilian, who originally was drafted by the Giants and later returned to the organization this offseason, provides the Phillies with middle-relief depth .
Philadelphia also made a separate trade Monday, acquiring left-handed reliever Brooks Raley from the New York Mets .
