The Philadelphia Phillies’ organizational pitching depth has suffered another blow, as the team announced that left-hander Kolby Allard has been placed on the full-season injured list at Triple-A Lehigh Valley due to a strained left adductor. The 28-year-old will miss the remainder of the 2026 season.
Allard, who did not appear in a game for the Phillies this season, had been providing valuable pitching depth for the organization. He appeared in four games for the Cleveland Guardians earlier this season before signing a minor-league deal with Philadelphia in the middle of the 2026 campaign.
The former first-round pick (2015 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves) has had a journeyman career spanning nine seasons across 113 games. Allard owns a career record of 13-26 with a 5.47 ERA, having pitched for the Braves, Texas Rangers, and a previous stint with the Phillies in 2024.
The loss of Allard comes amid a mounting injury crisis that has severely taxed the Phillies’ bullpen during a critical pennant race. The team is currently fighting to hold playoff positioning in the National League Wild Card race, sitting one game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the final spot.
Recent days have seen the Phillies bullpen stretched thin, with three extra-inning games in a five-day span, and the team has no scheduled off day until August 14. Interim manager Don Mattingly has been forced to navigate these challenges while the Phillies’ front office faces limited options, as the MLB trade deadline has passed.
Adding to the bullpen woes, recently acquired reliever Caleb Kilian was placed on the 15-day injured list with a left oblique strain sustained during Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 29-year-old, acquired at the trade deadline from the San Diego Padres as part of a deal that also brought Luis Arraez to Philadelphia, is expected to be sidelined for an extended period.
Mattingly acknowledged the severity of Kilian’s injury, stating, “It didn’t look good,” following the outing where he suffered the oblique issue on his final pitch. The Phillies have recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from Lehigh Valley to fill Kilian’s spot on the 26-man roster.
The injuries to Allard and Kilian are the latest in a series of setbacks for the Phillies’ relief corps. Earlier this season, setup man Brad Keller was lost for the year—and potentially part of 2027—with a torn UCL in his right elbow. Keller, who signed a two-year, $22 million deal in the offseason, had been a key piece of the team’s bullpen plans.
The Phillies’ bullpen, already considered the team’s most glaring weakness, now faces even greater strain. The team has already been forced to make significant roster moves, including optioning Chase Shugart and recalling Alan Rangel at various points to manage workloads.
The Phillies have made several corresponding moves to address their pitching shortages. In addition to Shugart’s recall, the team has been shuffling depth pieces at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, with Alan Rangel being recalled and other pitchers optioned or moved to the full-season injured list.
There has been some fan speculation about promoting top prospect Alex McFarlane, but the Phillies have indicated they do not believe he is ready for Major League duty. Instead, the team is relying on multi-inning options like Shugart and Rangel to manage the taxed bullpen.
With just over a month remaining in the regular season, the Phillies must navigate these pitching challenges while maintaining their playoff positioning. The loss of Allard further depletes an organization already thin on depth, though he was not expected to contribute at the Major League level this season.
The team’s front office must now rely on internal options to stabilize a bullpen that is “on its last legs,” as Mattingly and his staff attempt to hold the line through the final stretch of the 2026 campaign.
