The Philadelphia Phillies managed to come away from their weekend matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays with at least one win, which counts as a positive outcome. Pulling out a single victory over a team that isn’t really in the playoff hunt isn’t exactly a sustainable blueprint for long-term success, but there were still bright spots worth acknowledging. Kyle Schwarber finally ended his home-run drought early in the game, and Derek Hill delivered a walk-off in the bottom of the 12th inning, giving the team and its fans something to feel good about during what has otherwise been a strong month overall.
That said, it wasn’t a flawless afternoon for everyone on the roster. Luis Arraez, who has been a reliable contributor since arriving from San Francisco at the trade deadline, turned in easily his roughest performance in a Phillies uniform. He finished the day 0-for-6 and left seven runners stranded on base, and it’s fair to say the contest might not have even reached the 12th inning if he had come through in any of his earlier plate appearances.
The weekend also brought a more troubling development: Caleb Kilian appears to have injured his ribs on the final pitch he threw. After the game, Don Mattingly told reporters that the injury “didn’t look good,” which seems to indicate that the reliever could be facing an extended period away from the diamond.
The levels of concern surrounding Kilian and Arraez should probably be moving in opposite directions for the Phillies. Kilian’s injury only adds to what has already been a disappointing stint since he arrived as part of the Arraez trade. He’s struggled mightily out of Mattingly’s bullpen, surrendering seven runs (five of them earned) over just 3.1 innings with the club. Much of that damage came during a particularly rough outing against the Nationals, and while he did manage to pick up a win against the Blue Jays before getting hurt, his performance simply hasn’t lived up to expectations no matter how you look at it.
Depending on the severity of this rib issue—he’s already been placed on the 15-day IL with an oblique strain—it’s possible we’ve already seen the last of Kilian in 2026. If that turns out to be the case, the bullpen finds itself right back in the same situation it was in back in early July, with the only difference being Brooks Raley stepping in for the injured Brad Keller. That would represent a significant misstep by Dave Dombrowski and the front office, a failure that’s only somewhat softened by the fact that Kilian remains under team control through 2031.
Fortunately, similar worries about Arraez based on one poor game don’t really hold up under scrutiny. He’s been outstanding all season long, both at the plate and in the field, and he started his Phillies career with three multi-hit performances in his first five games. There’s simply nobody else in the league who offers the particular skill set he brings, giving Mattingly another unique weapon to utilize near the top of the batting order.
If the pitching staff continues to grapple with health concerns and inconsistent production beyond the established stars, it’s going to fall on Arraez and the offense to carry this team into October. One off day aside, he’s more than equipped to handle that responsibility.
