The Jalen Duren sweepstakes intensified on the second day of NBA free agency as the Los Angeles Lakers secured a second meeting with the Detroit Pistons restricted free agent center, signaling their serious intent to pair the 22-year-old All-Star with Luka Dončić.
Duren, who earned All-NBA Third Team and All-Star honors after a breakout regular season, met with the Lakers on Tuesday when free agency opened. The meeting was reportedly “productive,” with Los Angeles informing Duren that they view him as a maximum-salary-level player a valuation the Pistons have not matched in their negotiations. The big man is scheduled to meet with the Lakers again Wednesday morning.
The Sacramento Kings also met with Duren on Tuesday and are pursuing a sign-and-trade scenario that would send three-time All-Star Domantas Sabonis to Detroit as a replacement. However, league sources indicate the Pistons have “no interest” in that structure.

The tension stems from a significant gap between the Pistons and Duren in extension negotiations. Duren’s All-NBA selection made him eligible for a five-year, $287.1 million maximum extension—a substantial bump from the $239 million he would have commanded otherwise. The Pistons, however, appear reluctant to commit to that figure following Duren’s struggles in the postseason.
Duren’s regular-season numbers were impressive: 19.5 points on 65% shooting and 10.5 rebounds across 70 games, helping the Pistons achieve a 60-22 record and the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. But his production plummeted in the playoffs, where he averaged just 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds over 14 games against the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers. That postseason dip has reportedly made Detroit’s front office hesitant to offer the full max.
The Lakers’ aggressive pursuit comes after the departure of LeBron James, who left the franchise in free agency. The team is now building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, and Dončić is known to be a fan of Duren’s game. Los Angeles has already lost sharpshooter Luke Kennard to the Phoenix Suns and is prioritizing the acquisition of an elite center as free agency continues. The Lakers are also reportedly interested in Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler, another restricted free agent.
Despite Duren exploring sign-and-trade scenarios, the Pistons maintain significant control over the situation as a restricted free agent. Detroit can match any offer sheet Duren signs with another team and has been signaling a strong desire to keep the young center. A source close to negotiations told The Detroit News that Duren is “going to be back here (in Detroit)”.
ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported that the Pistons “are not interested in any sign and trade deals and will match any potential offer sheet he signs”. However, this stance could be a negotiating tactic, given the risk of tying up cap space while an offer sheet is pending. For the Lakers, that could mean waiting until July 7 for a decision, which would complicate their other roster-building efforts.
Adding another layer to the intrigue, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fischer reported that Duren’s camp has interest in a sign-and-trade destination beyond Los Angeles or Sacramento: the Boston Celtics. The Celtics are reportedly looking for frontcourt reinforcements regardless of what happens with Jaylen Brown this offseason.
The coming days will reveal whether the Lakers’ second meeting with Duren produces an offer sheet or whether Detroit can bridge the gap with their young star. For now, the restricted free agent market has one of its most intriguing storylines unfolding, with the Pistons holding the cards but the Lakers—and other suitors—pressing for a deal.
