The Detroit Pistons’ offseason pursuit of a co-star for Cade Cunningham may not be over just yet. Intriguing news emerged on Tuesday regarding a potential trade target, as Brooklyn Nets general manager Sean Marks revealed that extension discussions with forward Michael Porter Jr. are not currently taking place .
Porter, who holds a $179 million contract and is coming off a career-best season with the Nets, has been a subject of speculation regarding his future in Brooklyn. When asked about a potential extension for the 28-year-old forward, Marks indicated there is no immediate rush.
“We’ll have those discussions. We’ve got time. There’s no immediate hurry right now,” Marks told reporters .
Despite the stalled talks, the Nets’ general manager made it clear that the organization holds Porter in high regard. “We value him a lot. He had a terrific year. I love Mike, the guy, the person, the player, and I hope he is part of this team,” Marks added .
The situation has sparked considerable speculation. Brooklyn Nets insider Brian Lewis recently offered a blunt assessment of Porter’s future. “There’s either an extension or a trade,” Lewis said on the Locked On Nets podcast . The insider noted that Porter will naturally seek fair compensation following his strong performance and his impressive resume as a complementary piece on the Denver Nuggets’ 2023 championship team .
According to the reporting, the Nets appear unlikely to commit to Porter on a long-term deal that could restrict their financial flexibility. This stance could force Brooklyn to explore the trade market rather than risk losing him for nothing .
The Detroit Pistons have been linked to Porter in several trade scenarios throughout the offseason. After a 60-win season that ended in a second-round playoff exit, Detroit has been aggressively seeking a scoring partner for Cunningham . One proposed trade package from Bleacher Report suggested the Pistons could acquire Porter and rookie Drake Powell in exchange for the No. 21 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, Ron Holland II, Duncan Robinson, Caris LeVert, and a 2030 pick swap .
The Pistons’ need for offensive firepower is well-documented. Porter’s performance in his lone season with the Nets addressed that gap exactly, as he averaged 24.2 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game over 52 games, while shooting 36.3% from three-point range .
The 28-year-old forward was a first-round pick out of Missouri in 2018 and established himself as a premier floor-spacer in Denver. During the Nuggets’ championship season, he averaged 17.4 points per game and shot 41.4% from three . In his final season with Denver, Porter put up 18.2 points and 7.0 rebounds while connecting on 39.5% of his threes .
With the Nets rebuilding and Porter potentially hitting the trade block, Detroit may view this as an opportunity to add a proven scorer without surrendering significant long-term assets. Porter carries a $40 million cap hit for the 2026-27 season but will become a free agent afterward, allowing the Pistons flexibility if the experiment doesn’t work out .
As the offseason progresses, all eyes will be on whether Trajan Langdon and the Pistons front office will “hit the aggressive switch” again to pursue the former champion.
